Thanks to US-based chip maker, Qualcomm, you will be able to purchase a 4G feature phone in the very near future. The company has announced a new chipset that makes it possible to put 4G LTE internet in good old feature phones.
Smartphones are quite popular around the world. But feature phones are not quite out of the picture. Recently, HMD announced the return of the Nokia 3310, and it made waves around the world. About half of the world’s mobile population still use feature phones – and they want them to browse at high speeds. Qualcomm has taken steps to marry feature phones and high internet speeds.
As Mister Mo has put it, feature phones are evolving.
The 4G Feature Phone: Basic. Faster. More Capable
The new chipset is known as the Qualcomm 205 chipset.
With this chipset, feature phones will have more features than before, including support for VGA displays, integrated WiFi at 802.11n standard, and GPS. Feature phones with the Qualcomm 205 chipset will be able to achieve browsing speeds of up to 150Mbps on 4G LTE networks.
The Qualcomm 205 chipset will hit the market in upcoming feature phones. So far, the company has partnered with manufacturers like Nubia and HiPad to make 4G feature phones. Already, Indian mobile operator, Jio is rumoured to have plans for a 4G feature phone.
The rumoured Jio 4G feature phone is expected to cost just INR 1,299 (approximately USD 20). With Qualcomm stepping into the arena with a 4G-capable chip for feature phones, it is only a matter of time before we see a new generation of fast, basic feature phones flooding the market. Perhaps Jio has been waiting for Qualcomm all along. Who knows?
