5G internet is the next frontier to be conquered by mobile networks, and three US wireless carriers have announced plans to deploy commercial 5G networks this year in at least 40 cities by the end of 2018.
The mobile carriers include AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile, and the first US cities to get a taste of 5G technology will include: Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, New York, Waco, and Washington DC.
AT&T 5G Deployment
AT&T will deploy the new technology in 12 cities before the end of 2018, including the following cities in Texas: Atlanta, Dallas, and Waco.
Sprint 5G Deployment
Sprint’s first 5G networks will be deployed in Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Washington, DC and Houston.
T-Mobile 5G Deployment
New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Dallas will be the first cities to get 5G service from T-Mobile, and say they will have 5G service in 30 cities by the end of 2018.
Verizon 5G Deployment
We do not have detailed information for Verizon yet, but the wireless operator has plans to deploy Verizon 5G in California.
5G Networks
The first official 5G standard has been released, paving the way for networks to hit the ground running. Network trials have happened in quite a number of countries across the world, including the US, Sweden, Estonia, South Africa, Japan, Italy, the UK, China, and Canada, among others.
Mobile network suppliers, Ericsson and Nokia Networks, already have 38 and 31 5G operator partnerships respectively, according to Reuters.
5G Smartphones
Of course, 5G networks will need 5G devices like mi-fi, routers, smartphones, and tablets. The world’s first 5G smartphone was demonstrated last year, even though it was a non-commercial unit. The first 5G smartphones for the market are expected to be announced this year.
But they may not be ready for the market until early 2019. As such, the first 5G devices are likely to be portable hotspots (mi-fi) devices. ZTE has already confirmed that its first 5G smartphone won’t be ready till early 2019
Companies like Huawei and ZTE are likely to be the first to deliver 5G devices to the market. They are both legendary for pushing out mi-fi and routers to the market in support of new wireless technologies.
What Does 5G Mean To You?
5G means insanely fast internet. We are looking at speeds ten times faster than 4G and more. The theoretical download speeds for 5G connections are in the range of 1-10Gbps.
By comparison, 4G offers 100Mbps. In everyday situations, 4G users get between 2Mbps and 40 Mbps speeds. A 2014 4G LTE speed test comparison in New York showed that the average produced an average speed of 13Mbps.
In everyday situations, 5G is expected to deliver 500Mbps – 4Gbps to end users. To paint a clearer picture, with 5G internet, you will be able to download a full length movie in mere seconds.
