6GB RAM is on the way for mobiles, courtesy of Samsung

It wasn’t too long ago that we celebrated the coming of 4GB RAM on smartphones. The first smartphone with a 4GB RAM chip hit the stores in Q2 2015 – about 6 months ago. Samsung is pushing the envelope further by commencing the mass production of the mobile industry’s first 6GB RAM chips.

So, we are looking at better performance on flagship devices as soon as these chips arrive on smartphones. We wonder what device will first ship with this.

  1. ridiculous, this is a specs race. while it is probably good in the long run, it’s useless right now. 4 GB RAM is overkill right now. if 4 GB RAM +8 cores is future proof for the forseeable future (3 years), why would anyone need 6 GB RAM right now? unless Samsung plans to make TouchWiz even more resource intensive they should chill with mass production abeg

  2. It’s a specs war out there, more Ram,more screen resolution, thinner bezels, thinner phones and more CPU cores and yet nobody does anything about a better battery technology, talk about misplaced priorities..

  3. Wait, is this race for gigantic RAM an Android thing? Because I don’t hear other operating systems fixated on the size of the RAM.

Like 3WT says, it seems like a bit of overkill. Are they going to make corresponding longer life device batteries to go with it because that’s what people really want.

Noni, yes; it is an Android thing – resource-hungry Android.well, perhaps BlackBerry 10 too.
