This Day reports that Airtel Nigeria CEO, Segun Ogunsanya, has called for the adoption of a telco-led mobile money model in Nigeria as against the current bank-led model. According to him, “a telco-led model will help expand retail banking, thereby driving financial inclusion in the unbanked segment”.
I have argued the same here on Mobility Arena, wondering why mobile money services in Nigeria keep targeting the banked as against the unbanked. At the moment, banks drive mobile money services in Nigeria, with telcos only play a supporting role. Nigeria’s population remains largely unbanked and most of that population still do not use mobile money.
