For a while now, the Amazon Echo has been the leading home music speaker on the market. Apple has made a significant effort to change that. Recently, the company announced the competitor to the Echo, known as the HomePod. The aim of this speaker is to be both good and smart, as “Sonos aren’t speakers and Amazon Echos aren’t good speakers”, according to Apple SVP of Global Marketing Phil Schiller. Thus, with the HomePod, Apple aims to be the best of both worlds. This is a good marketing strategy, no doubt.
The Apple HomePod also aims to be beautiful, too. It has a pill-shaped circular speaker, with a seven beam-forming tweeter array. It also comes with a custom-made woofer and an Apple A8 chip. Furthermore, it comes with multi-channel echo cancellation, real-time acoustic modeling and so much more. I’m sure that so many audiophiles will be pleased with this device.
There’s more to this device than just looking cute, however. The HomePod can scan the area around it to optimize the audio experience. Also, it works well with Apple Music. Basically, you can tell the speaker to play anything in your Apple Music library and more. You can say “I like this song” or “play more songs like that” in order to get similar tracks. Furthermore, you can ask Siri other queries, like news headlines, weather reports, sports scores and so much more. Also, if you have HomeKit-enabled devices, you can control your lights, garage doors, air-conditioning and other things using this speaker.
So far, only two color variations have been announced, which are white and space-grey. Apple has announced the price of the HomePod, too. It will cost just $349. Shipping will begin in the US, UK and Australia later this year, while other parts of the world will begin shipping next year. That’s all about the HomePod for now. Hopefully there will be more news about the specifications of the device in coming months.
