Apple says no reception problem; its just the signal bars

Posted by

iPhone 4 gallery 10Apple has just taken deception to the highest levels possible. I’ll cut to the chase. Apple says the iPhone 4 does not have reception problems, but that all phones have issues in areas of poor signal and it’s just that the iPhone shows the available signal in a wrong way.

From Apple’s statement:

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

Incorrect signal bars are responsible for dropped calls and data disconnections when the iPhone 4 is held in a certain way? You can read the rest of this cop-out from apple’s website.

Please tell that to the marines.

  1. I don’t think you do Apple much justice. Please give them the benefit of the doubt. According to them, they state;

    “At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?

    The truth from this is that it is not all the units but a few that have this problem. Secondly they also suggested that;

    “We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same- the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused.

    As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

    We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do.

    Thank you for your patience and support.”

    This means that if you have bought the phone and you still feel that their explanation is bullshit then you can return their bloody phone within 30 days of the announcement. What more assurance does anyone need?

  2. I also read the announcement from Apple from their site. For those of us that want, the full Apple statemet, mobile-review did a good job of it and even went further to review the iphone 4 with glowing ratings/review.

    by the way, Apple noted that all those alleged Steve Jobs prior comments on the iphone 4 on the internet were all fake. {http://www.mobile-review.com/fullnews/main/index_eng.shtml}.

    now back to the chase, if there is an offer to return the iphone4 within 30 days of purchase for a full refund by Apple, then Apple knows it has a stellar product. Good quality. It even went further to apologizze. I doubt many people would return their units back. the phone is a compelling smartphone with lots of raving reviews on the net!

  3. From Time magazine website;

    ‘ “We were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong.”
    APPLE, in a letter to iPhone 4 users, explaining that the new phones can suddenly drop 4 or 5 bars because they were not accurately reflecting signal strength in the first place. The company will fix the error, which has been around since the original iPhone’

  4. Things are really getting more interesting by the day.

    I happen to be of a very simple mind and this brain of mine tells me that if there is a calculation error for the bars displayed, then the problem should affect ALL iphone 4 units out there since they are all manufactured based on this calculation error. Or am i not getting something?

    Also, why are they teaching people how to hold their phones when the problem is in the signal bars calculations?

    What role has recruitment of anthena experts in the whole saga?

    I think we’ve started hearing from the Steve Jobs worshipers and we shall hear more.

  5. give them a break for a flawed and expensive product.I wont give them a break if i purchase it or do you think money grows from trees.Is it too much to ask for a perfect product after spending ones hard earned money for such a disaster. it is the buyers that need’to be given a break and not the other way round period

  6. @Deoladoctor. The error has been around since the previous iphones. Check the Time magazine quotes that I pasted above. Also, the official position from APple is that many of the posts and emails online from the last couple of days did not emanate from APlle/Steve Jobs.

    @arumob. Apple says that despite the explanation, if you are still unhappy and “you too Vex”, that you are free to return the iphone4 within 30 days with FULL REFUND! Mind you the iphone 4 is less than 3 weeks on the market. So anyone who has bought it and hate it because of the antenna problem or in fact any other problem can return it for a FULL refund from Apple. Read this (official); “… …For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused.

    As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

    We hope you love the iPhone 4 as much as we do.

    Thank you for your patience and support.”

  7. I have been reading this article and comments for some time and have been refraining from commenting. But let us put our passion down and listen to some level of reasoning and objective assessment. If APple is misleading the masses as Deoladoctor carefully noted. If the product is not better than bullshit, then the consumers or buyers can simply return their product and get a FULL REFUND and buy an Android Device or even a Nokia phone. But I bet the buyers wouldn’t do that, If you’ve seen the iphone4 and used it, then you’ll apprciate the beauty and functionality of it.

    @Deoladoctor. And by the way, it is not ALL the units of the iphone4 that has the problem! Only a few! If it wasn’t Apple that was on the hot seat, if it was other manufacturers that had this factory defect or “software” issues, this problem may not have been overtly over-bloated.

  8. @Afewgoodmen

    Are you telling me that the tutorials on how to handle your phone did not emanate from apple/Jobs. Why didn’t they refute it immediately at the time, knowing it could damage their reputations.

    The way i see it, apple is a veteran when it comes to law suits and this new turn is a good preparation for what they expect. You now have to prove to the court (with technical evidences) that you actually have a reception problem.
    Also, you have to take into consideration, the fact that “all iphones models from inception” are based on this signal bars calculations and they are working well.
    Your lawyer has to be very good indeed.

  9. @Ovhumuahwe

    ” If it wasn’t Apple that was on the hot seat, if it was other manufacturers that had this factory defect or “software” issues, this problem may not have been overtly over-bloated. ”

    I quite agree with you there. But then, everything apple is always overhyped.

    The buyers will not return their products. They are the faithfuls. They’ll be waiting for the update to fix their toys. Its the lawyers that apple is worried about.

  10. Also new from Apple; Apple has dropped the usual restocking fee for iPhone customers who want to return their smartphones, the company confirmed on Friday.

    “In a statement posted earlier today to its Web site that blamed reception problems on a flawed signal strength indicator, Apple said that buyers could return their iPhone for “a full refund” within 30 days of the purchase if they weren’t satisfied.” {Culled from PC world}. No need to pay the 10% restocking fee.

    Is Apple not generous enough? If any one feels they don’t like the iphone4 after purchase, whatever the genuine or flimsy reason, Just return it back to Apple within 30 days of purchase!

  11. Update from Engadget

    Although there’s never been any question that there’s something going on with the iPhone 4’s fancy new antenna system, we really haven’t seen any rigorous testing confirming that the issue is real, severe, and affects every phone. That just changed: Consumer Reports tested three iPhone 4s and several other AT&T phones in their RF isolation chamber that simulates varying levels of signal from every carrier, and found that the iPhone 4 was the only handset to suffer signal-loss issues. What’s more, CR directly says that its findings call Apple’s explanation of a miscalculated signal meter into question since the tests “indicate that AT&T’s network might not be the primary suspect.”

    Consumer Reports confirms iPhone 4 antenna problems — and so do we

  12. Apple definitely has some case to answer. THere is nothing bad in offering a refund for rejected iphone 4s. But even with that, Apple iphone’s consumers still require to know the truth. Even if they do not want to come out with the truth, they need to halt production and correct the antenna issue before selling further iphone 4s. Apple has unwittingly, perhaps “deliberatley” marred an otherwise exquisite phone!!!!

  13. @FE. No body says that the iphone OS 4.01 update would fix the iphone 4’s antenna (externna) issue/problem. The link you put there is an old post. The Apple press conference was today and it has ended. The fix are bumpers.

    Check “http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/16/live-from-apples-iphone-4-press-conference/” for the full transcript of the conference.

  14. APple never denied the antenna problem. Even the sites mentioned above states so clearly. If there was no antenna problem, then why is APPLE distributing free bumpers to buyers? The free bumper goes on until September 30th 2010, when APple would have likely fixed the Antenna issue. FE, why don’t you read the transcript of the APple’s press conference that I posted the link above.

    ANd by the way, a pressman questioned Steve Jobs on the Bloomberg report you posted a link to above. Bllomberg states that an APple Engineer was aware of the antenna issue from the start. Steve Jobs denies this. HE called it “Bullshit”. Nothing like that ever happened. He even challenged them to bring evidence to that effect.

    The iphone 4 is a very good phone. There are flaws in a few of the phones quite alright, but that doesn’t make it un-useable. Or less a stellar device. The sales are still on. 1.7 million phones sold in 7 countries in 3 days! 3 million devices sold in 3 weeks. (A million a week?).

    And from July 30th, it would be in 17 more countries!
