Samsung in China

IDC reports on the Chinese smartphone market for the last quarter of 2014, and the figures are not looking good for Samsung. The OEM has dropped from 18.8% in Q4 2013 to 7.9% in Q4 2014. Here is the table showing the top 5 smartphone makers in the country as at Q4 2014:

  1. Xiaomi – 13.7%
  2. Apple – 12.3%
  3. Huawei – 11%
  4. Lenovo – 9.5%
  5. Samsung – 7.9%
  6. Others – 45.6%

  1. So sad. But that’s how the world goes round in the phone industry.

Tomorrow, the pendulum will swing again in another OEM’s favour.

To win again in China, Samsung might have to cut down drastically on its pricing.

Only Apple can get away with high pricing because its premium pricing regime has been cast in stone since ages.

  2. Because China has the population doesn’t mean they are a key market Nigeria is an example. xiome or whatever they call themselves is still not making profit. Mr MO I don’t like the new blog layout, it’s not good on opera mini and the pop up is making things worse.

  3. Xiaomi and OnePlus might struggle in other markets. but they remain crucial in their market alongside Huawei and Lenovo. Samsung might gain some ground with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S6 (hopefully).

  4. inevitable really, as Xiaomi, Huawei & Lenovo improve their hardware game and brand image Samsung will continue to lose business to these OEMs. also the “Others” Meizu, Oppo and co will continue to increase marketshare. frankly the Apple shroud is the only reason why Apple’s market share isn’t taking a bashing as well, they’re losing customers but the net change for them is still positive as more people are able to afford iPhones and others left their previous ecosystem for iOS and the iPhone 6/6+
