Blackberry Porsche Design P'9981 : Genius or Stupidity?

The Blackberry P’9981 phone that came out of the partnership between Porsche design and Blackberry has been making the rounds in previous weeks with varied opinions from practically everybody that hears about the phone.

BB Porsche 480

FEATURES
First off the phone runs on the Blackberry 7 OS and features a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 CPU with 768MB of RAM. It also has a 2.8-inch touchscreen with a screen resolution of 640 x 480 powered by a 1,230 mAh battery.

Other features that the P’9981 sports are GPS, Near Field Communication(NFC) and a 5MP camera that has a LED flash and shoots 720p videos.

Even though this phone is made and is marketed as a premium product, it’s chasis and to some extent shape is based off the Blackberry Bold 9900. It features a custom user interface skin that matches the styling and also comes with a price tag of $2,300.

PRICING
That last paragraph must have gotten your attention because this phone costs $2,300 which when converted to Naira is a whooping 365,700 Naira minus shipping and retailer charges.

It is that expensive because of premium materials used in the manufacture, the craft involved and hey it has Porsche in the name which among the wealthy screams splendor and swag.

I further investigated by going to the Porsche Nigeria website to check out the price of Porsche cars and the cheapest car was the Cayman which cost 11.5 million Naira and the most expensive being a Panamera Turbo S which goes for 49.5 million Naira.

By analysis, Porsche’s do not come on the cheap side so I wasn’t really surprised when someone told me that it goes for 400 thousand Naira in Nigeria at the moment. Several people however are so stunned by the price that someone even asked me one day if it had unlimited “pinging”.

CONCLUSIONS
Many people fail to grab the concept of such a product like the P’9981 and that it is not a mainstream product but a product that is exclusively made for those that can afford it. Business men and stinking rich millionaires fit the profile of people who acquire such devices like this most times as a show of wealth and splendor.

What do you think about the Porsche Design P’9981 by Blackberry and if you had the capacity to buy it would you?

  1. I have no problem with the cost or the design, I am very concerned though by the lengths people would go to to own one

  2. the phone is nothing different from the 9700 except for the bb7OS &nfc features. just like a nokia 3310 made of gold or Ghadaffi’s hand gun made of gold..
strictly for the rich and famous..

But trust avaerage lagos boy and his fictitious lifestyle, he’ll go to any length to have it as to augment his “societal status”

  3. Its a status statement. But trust we nigerians will soon have hundreds of this phone.Currently goes 4 350k @ slot. 9ja guys will soon be searching for the UK used…..hehe

  4. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, 100 million of us live on less than $1 a day; at the same time, it’s been said that 45 million of us are online.

Both BlackBerry and Porsche know who they’re targetting. with this product. Wannabes aspiring to buy this as some kind of status symbol will simply add to their coffers.

Personally, this is one ugly phone! I wouldn’t even consider buying the P’9981 at a tenth of the price. Even if I could get my hands on one, it would be simply to sell it on to some desperate wannabe at a ridiculously high price!

  5. With #400000 I will not buy a single phone with it.Rather it will empower so many serious minded folks around with good dreams vision drive and goal. A rich man in the midst of poor people is poorer than the poor people around him.

  6. What do you think about the Porsche Design P’9981 by Blackberry and if you had the capacity to buy it would you?

    No- i would not.

I guess the world is full of FOOLISH n CRAZY people. I have stopped wondering about them…

  7. Seriously if I had a job that payed 1mil a month I would buy it. I have always loved exclusivity I hate popular things but If I simply can’t afford it ?????? probs but if I can I will buy.
    My 2 cents

  8. I’ve seen the phone displayed at Slot. The phone simply looks beautiful and unique in my opinion but the price tag of N350,000 coupled with the fact that it runs BBC OS only reminded me that it is not my kind of phone.

No. Certainty, I can’t spend that much on any phone. No phone is worth such a hefty price tag in my opinion.

  9. Well as the author of this article has rightly stated, this is an exclusive phone. If you have enough disposable income to afford it and it meets your needs, why not? Don’t beef those who can afford it and decide to buy it, after all #isityourmoney?

  10. I won’t, even if i have the capacity. But I ain’t mad at those buying it. Its about creating a class amongst BB users. Designers have made similar stuff for the iPhone too, costing an arm and a leg.

  11. You see, I really don’t understand why some people take things slightly personal. It is just a phone. Fine! But if you can’t afford it, don’t diss those that can and don’t insinuate they don’t have sense.
The same thing that happens in the car world happens in the mobile phone world. There’s nothing rolls royce can do that avalon can’t.
Its simply a matter of exclusivity. Errone has †?? right to spend his/her last dime on it.

  12. @Keweno and CEO, everyone is entitled to their opinion, even if we don’t share their point of view. If I read correctly, the writer of the piece asked reader’s opinions on whether they would buy it if they could.

The reality is that while some can afford to buy it without thinking twice, others can’t (not collectors), but will view owning one as some kind of status symbol and a step up the social ladder.

  13. CEO…
It is just a phone. Fine! But if you can’t afford it, don’t diss those that can and don’t insinuate they don’t have sense.

    SENSE >> sensible
? adjective PRACTICAL, realistic, responsible, reasonable, commonsensical, rational, logical, sound, balanced, sober, no-nonsense, pragmatic, level-headed, thoughtful, down-to-earth, wise, prudent, judicious, sagacious, shrewd.
    —OPPOSITES foolish.

Perhaps u have heard the saying ‘more money than sense’?

    Need i say more?

  16. On a personal note, I wouldn’t be caught dead with this phone. I don’t see anything fantastic about the design plus the software is just subpar. If it were an iOS/Android Device, it’d be easy to accept but BB? Your pings will not be encarved in Gold and like you said its just like the BB 9900.

But since many people are not like me, the phone will still sell

  17. Eye bee kay, yes, I have heard it. But say that to those that buy million dollar cars too.
Noni, we are saying the same thing. I’m just saying no need to think less of those that get the phone, even at the cost of an arm and a leg.

  18. I personally do not have problems with the pricing, it is not meant to be a mass market phone, it is a luxury item and meant for those who can afford it, nokia also had the vertu brand which were highly priced but well built. The same analogy goes for gucci or micheal kors bag which sells for thousands of dollars, you pay for the name and the luxury that is associated with it. Rich folks spend millions of dollars of art work all the time, I am sure there are way cheaper art work that can be bought for several naira…

  19. I’m very certain that almost every regular or newbie here has invested some amount of money on smart phones or tablet pcs. I dare say that there are some people who may think that these purchases are way too expensive and maybe a waste of money. To you, buying the blackberry porsche may be senseless and a waste of money but also remember that the smartphone or tablet pc you use may also be a monumental waste to someone else.
