Here are the different car body types available

There are various types of car body types. These are designed to attract customers’ attention. New models often feature blends of different styles and classes and it is often difficult to tell different car types apart. Here is a guide to the different car designs available.

SPORTS CAR

A sports car is a small, two-door car. It features exquisite design, powerful drivetrain for enhanced performance and a sharp steering for excellent handling. The sports car is usually very expensive. The Bugatti Veyron is an example of a sports car.

SEDAN/SALOON

This is a passenger car with a bonnet covering the engine and a separate boot for luggage at the rear. This car type has seating for at least 4 people.  It is one of the most popular body types today. There are different subcategories of sedans based on size or class, including executive, luxury and sports sedans. The Toyota Camry is an example of the sedan.car body types

SUV (SPORT UTILITY VEHICLE)

This is a type of vehicle defined by its increased ground clearance, large wheels and aggressive exterior design. SUVs typically provide great off-road abilities, and they usually have four-wheel drive. The Jeep Cherokee and the Range Rover are examples of the SUV.

HATCHBACK

This is a car body type featuring a rear, up-swinging door which provides convenient access to cargo space. There are three-door and five-door options available. There are also various sizes of the hatchback.  The Volkswagen Golf and the Ford Focus are examples.

WAGON

This is similar to the sedan. The state wagon is basically an extended hatchback with a larger cargo space. Wagons provide the same cabin space as sedans, although they may feature an increased head space for rear seat passengers. Upon folding the rear seat, wagons may offer transportation ability similar to that of vans. The Volvo XC70 is a great example of the wagon.

CROSSOVER

This is a new car body type that combines the features of true SUVs with that of regular hatchbacks. Typically built on regular car platforms, crossovers usually have an increased ground clearance and larger wheels.one example is the Toyota Rav4.

PICKUP/TRUCK

This is a utility vehicle typically used for commercial purposes. It features a passenger cabin, either two-door or four-door, and an open cargo space with low sides and a loading gate at the back. The pickup truck is usually equipped with an all-wheel drive system, which provides excellent off-road performance and towing capabilities. A great example is the Toyota Hilux.

VAN/MPV (MULTI-PURPOSE VAN)

These are designed for comfortable transportation of people. However, commercial vans only feature a front seat row, with the remaining space used for cargo. This class of vehicles includes the Renault Scenic, the Dodge Caravan and the Volkswagen Type 2.

COUPE

This is a two-body car type, based on the full-size sedan. Coupes feature the two-seat cabin or the four-seat cabin, with limited space in the rear row. Coupe models often come with top of the range trim level and engines. However, the main difference between the coupe and the sedan is the edgier design. An example is the Ford Mustang.

CONVERTIBLE/CABRIOLET

The defining characteristic of the convertible is the retractable roof. There are different types of retractable roofs, including the folding textile roof, the detachable hardtop or the retractable hardtop. The Cadillac Eldorado is a good example of the convertible.
