For all of the iPhone’s reputation as a device that is big on privacy, the way it displays notifications when in standby mode is a complete privacy sham. Which is why you might want to disable notifications while your iPhone is in StandBy mode.

I understand that having notifications displayed while my iPhone is in StandBy mode allows me to conveniently view incoming messages, alerts, responses from Siri, and music playback controls in an easily readable full-screen view without having to unlock the device. It provides quick access to essential information and interactions, especially when the device is docked or charging.
One potential disadvantage of having notifications displayed while your iPhone is in StandBy mode is the potential for increased battery consumption due to the screen being active more frequently. But that isn’t what I am bothered about.
In addition, some users may find the constant display of notifications distracting, especially in environments where they prefer minimal visual interruptions. The iPhone exists for you, after all, and not the other way round.
What I am really concerned about is how the feature can be a huge privacy hole, if sensitive information is visible on the screen while your iPhone is in StandBy mode, especially in shared or public spaces. Anyone who is within sight in close proximity can also see all of that information.
As such, I believe it is important to be able to disable these notifications while your iPhone is in StandBy mode. How do you do it? Let me walk you through two options.
How to Disable Notifications While Your iPhone Is in StandBy Mode
To disable notifications while your iPhone is in StandBy mode, you can follow these steps:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap StandBy.
- Under “Notifications,” toggle the switch beside Show Notifications so that it is in the gray OFF position.
This will prevent any notifications from appearing on your screen when your iPhone is in StandBy mode. However, you will still receive critical notifications, such as weather alerts, emergency alerts, and check-in notifications, that are important for your safety and well-being.
How to Hide Notification Previews while your iPhone is in StandBy mode
Instead of disabling notifications outrightly, as spelt out above, you can also choose to hide notification previews in StandBy mode by enabling the Show Preview on Tap Only option. This will only show you the notification details when you tap on them.
