If there is one trait that cuts across all strata of society, races and qualifications, it is the desire to love and be loved. However you define love, in all probability, you desire to be loved.
Do bear with me as I adopt the popular understanding of love – that is feelings of affection – for this article. One of the nicest feelings that humans have comes from loving someone and being loved in return by that individual. Sometimes, however, someone has feelings for you, but for certain reasons the feeling is not mutual or you cannot reciprocate their love. Whatever you do, do not trample on the feelings of people by scoffing on their love if and when they do express it to you.
As a matter of fact, millions of people are dying to be loved by someone. They would give anything to have someone express and profess love to them. So, what do you do when you are unable to reciprocate an individual’s love?
Respect it. That’s the least you can do. Respect their feelings. Don’t mock or scoff. Don’t be rude, even if they do not fit your “standards”. You can at least let them know by your words and actions that you value being an object of their affections. Be firm about the lines that cannot be crossed, but be polite, respectful, even friendly. There is even the popular notion that such persons must be cut off. I don’t get that. If you go about disassociating yourself from people who love you, errrr….do you prefer to be surrounded by people who hate you or cannot stand your presence?
At times, people who get a lot of attention tend to act like jerks. Do resist the temptation. No-one who professes to like or love you should be treated like a jerk, unless they step out of line and act like one. Toodles!
