Why Will CES 2019 Las Vegas be Different?

Slated to hold between January 8-12, this year’s event is getting a lot of press already. That is not strange at all and with the flurry of economic incidents in 2018, it is to be expected. In an interview with Tom’s Guide, CTA Chief Executive, Gary Shapiro spoke passionately about pressing issues in the tech industry while giving his predictions about innovations in CES 2019.

Shapiro had very sharp words for Facebook, expressing his disappointment with the company’s privacy violations. According to him, the social media platform had acted irresponsibly. Speaking further, he says, “So why do I care about Facebook? In a sense, they’ve poisoned the water for the debate, because they didn’t act responsibly, and it’s upsetting to me.”

On what to expect from this year’s event, Shapiro highlights Augmented Reality (AI), Digital Health and 5G.

What Trends to Expect

  1. Voice Control: According to Jack Wetherill, Principal Consultant at FutureSource, voice control will dominate the show with appliances using voice control as opposed to the popular (and slowly dying) remote control. Sony, LG and Samsung are expected to feature prominently in this range. Meanwhile, Toshiba is not getting left behind either as its upcoming OLED, 4K HDR and Full HD televisions feature Amazon Alexa integration to enable voice control.

2. Foldable Displays: Not just phones but foldable laptops and tablets. This may sound far-fetched but the world is gradually inching towards that end. The anticipation is to see laptops with OLED screens that cover the entire keyboard region. This gives a comparatively massive surface area for usage.

3. Augmented Reality (AI): This is a guaranteed expectation of CES 2019 Las Vegas, considering the way it had been trending right through 2018. From Yamaha to IBM and Panasonic, AI will be a major conversation topic especially with its application to diverse fields; health, production etc.

4. 5G: This was also a major conversation topic in 2018 but only at a budding level. Having grown considerably within the last few months, CES 2019 Las Vegas should provide a veritable platform for robust conversation about 5G especially with the big guns involved in the event; T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and Ericsson.
