Some big changes will be made in upcoming iPhones and this may mean that those devices will not offer the fastest mobile data speeds. I Know! Perhaps I shouldn’t have dropped the news that way. So, let’s start from the very beginning.
Qualcomm is a multinational semiconductor and telecommunications equipment company that designs and markets wireless telecommunications products and services to connected device makers. Their innovations were incorporated into the industry’s standard for faster 3G and 4G LTE networks and are major supplier of 4G chips for smartphones. The chip maker has stated that it doesn’t expect to supply modems for any upcoming iPhones, as Apple intends to solely use their competitor’s modems rather than theirs in the next iPhone model.
So whose 4G chips will Apple be putting in their smartphones? Qualcomm did not say, but it is believed that it will be Intel. If this is true, Intel will have to meet up to the expectations of its users since speed tests have shown Qualcomm-powered smartphones are capable of faster network speeds than the devices running on Intel processors.
How Android Phones Deliver The Fastest Mobile Data Speeds
Speedtest app maker, Ookla, earlier this week released a report that showed Android phones using Snapdragon 845 modems deliver faster internet than Intel-powered phones on the same network. The report states that even with poor signal conditions, Qualcomm 4G chips performed 192% better than Intel equivalents on upload speeds.
A recent analysis by Ookla, a global leader in internet testing and network diagnostics, of Speedtest Intelligence data* revealed double-digit gains in latency and triple-digit gains in download and upload speeds for Snapdragon 845 Android smartphones versus Intel-based non-Android smartphones. Specifically, the analysis measured the capabilities of the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform with Snapdragon X20 LTE and the Intel XMM 7480 and 7360 modems in non-Android smartphones on AT&T and T-Mobile cellular networks. Overall, the cellular performance of Android smartphones based on the Snapdragon 845 outpaced the Intel devices in every evaluated metric.
Pointing at statistics from the report, Qualcomm says “Android smartphones with the Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 845 Mobile Platform are some of the fastest mobile devices available today, with up to 192% faster data speeds compared to non-Android smartphones”.
Also, iPhones with Qualcomm modems have faster LTE speed than those with Intel Modems. It is being speculated that Apple could be artificially crippling the Qualcomm modem to get similar performance with Intel modem. And if Apple is ditching Qualcomm 4G chips, the result will be iPhones that lag behind the fastest mobile data speeds in the industry.
One wonders if this development will reduce the demand for the next iPhone. Others have wondered if Intel will be able to keep up with the production demand for Apple iPhone models and what Apple would do should there be a shortage of 4G modems.
It is almost 100% certain that the next iPhone will not use a Qualcomm 4G modem and will deliver slower mobile network connectivity. If you want the fastest mobile data speeds going forward, it looks like what you want is an Android smartphone, not an iPhone.
