Microsoft is getting ready to release its first update to Windows Phone 8.1, and they have disclosed some of the features it’s coming with. They include:
1.) Folder support: With this, Windows Phone users can now drag one tile on top of another and create a folder to organize apps. This is a feature Android and iOS have had for years, so it great to see Microsoft finally closing this gap.
2.) Interactive case support (Smart covers): Other brands like Samsung, HTC etc, use cases that wake their phones up when open, and display some information when closed. Microsoft is bringing this feature to Windows phone.
3.) Support for more device resolutions: This includes 1280 x 800 WXGA, 540 x 960 native qHD and screen sizes of 6.01″ to 7″ for the 1280 x 768 WXGA resolution. This will go a long way in helping interested OEMs make more varieties of Windows phones.
Other notable features of the update include:
- Cortana launched officially for China, UK (as beta), also for Canada, India and Australia (as alpha).
- Xbox music app updated with more features.
- Sms merging and forwarding feature. (I’m suprised they didn’t have this feature all this while).
- Apps Corner : This feature lets you give people access to selected apps on your phone.
All these and more are expected with the update. Microsoft plans to release the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 to developers possibly as soon as next week, then officially to 8.1 users in coming months.
