Four of the top five smartphones shipped in the first quarter of 2018 are Apple iPhones, and the iPhone X sits at the top of the table. The iPhone X pulled this feat off despite warnings about low sales. While it is big news that Apple smartphones dominate the top 5 list, What is even more interesting to know that a Xiaomi smartphone is on that list. Not Samsung; not Huawei; Xiaomi.
The Xiaomi Redmi 5A made 5th place on the top five list. That probably wasn’t the model you were expecting to see. We too. We didn’t see this coming. This is the Xiaomi Redmi 5A. That is a $100 smartphone rubbing shoulders with some of the most expensive smartphones in the world.
Here is the full list of the top five smartphones shipped in Q1 2018.
Top Five Smartphones in Q1 2018
- iPhone X: 16 million
- iPhone 8: 12.5 million
- iPhone 8 Plus: 8.3 million
- iPhone 7: 5.6 milions
- Xiaomi Redmi 5A: 5.4 million units
Just outside the top 5 list is the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus.
Xiaomi has been upsetting things here and there in recent times. It is the fastest growing smartphone brand in India, now commanding 30% of the market (read last week’s news cap). But beyond india, Xiaomi is also the fastest growing smartphone brand in China and globally. So, perhaps this is not going to be a one-time thing.
We just might see a Xiaomi smartphone take the 4th, 3rd, 2nd, or even the top spot one day.
