Google Map Maker is a crowd sourced service Google uses to update Google Maps. Any user is free to log in and update, places, streets, locations etc and whatever they input is automatically accepted by the system. Just recently, the picture below was found on Google Maps on a location in Pakistan.
The picture cause heavy uproar all over the internet, subsequently Google apologized and took it down. Following much more complains and spam, Google has decided to shut down further updates to Maps Maker till further notice. This is will let them manually fix the backlog of complains from various sources. The service will be reopened in the future, but this time verification might be done manually.
Product Manager at Google Maps Maker, Pavithra Kanakarajan said this in an announcement:
As some of you know already, we have been experiencing escalated attacks to spam Google Maps over the past few months. The most recent incident was particularly troubling and unfortunate – a strong user in our community chose to go and create a large scale prank on the Map. As a consequence, we suspended auto-approval and user moderation across the globe, till we figured out ways to add more intelligent mechanisms to prevent such incidents. All of our edits are currently going through a manual review process.
