Google is Not Pushing the Nexus 4 in Nigeria

google-nexus-4

If I have to list the number of questions and enquiries about the Google Nexus 4’s availability and pricing in Nigeria that I have received in the last few days, it might just fill up a small notebook. So, here I am addressing the issue in public. Hopefully, after this, I can get some rest. No?

Google Is Not targeting Nigeria

The Google Nexus 4 is being pushed in very limited markets. I mean very, very limited markets. Nigeria is not one of them. As such, do not expect the Nexus 4 to be officially available in the land of Green-White-Green. Here is what you get when you search for the Nexus 4 in the Play Store:

In English, here it is:

Sorry! Devices on Google Play is not available in your country yet. We’re working to bring devices to more countries as quickly as possible. Please check back again soon.

LG Will Be Selling own version

LG is the manufacturer of the Nexus 4, and its full name is Nexus 4 E960. While Google is selling the device online at the very attractive price that everyone is drooling over, it is simply because they are subsidizing it in their own interests. Google will be selling limited, subsidized units of the Nexus 4 via Play Store. But LG will be selling the Nexus 4 without any subsidy, and in a much wider circle than Google is.

Implications? If you are in a market in which the Nexus 4 is not being pushed by Google, and want it so bad, you better stop drooling at Google’s subsidized price. It is not in LG’s interests to subsidize the device. They need to make direct profits from sales, after all, unlike Google whose income comes from adverts and Play Store sales. LG’s un-subsidized units cost almost twice as much as what Google is offering. LG has an official presence here in Nigeria, so you can expect the Nexus 4 here in the country soon, but at a higher cost.

I know that some of you will be miffed at the picture that I have painted, but I am only the artist. People in Countries in which Google is not pushing the nexus 4 will have to settle for the un-subsidized units from LG. I didn’t create the scenario. Good luck to you Nexus 4 lovers.

Now, I am off to get some much-needed rest. Cheerio.

  1. Mr MO, you lie!!! I won’t allow you to rest until I get the nexus 4 in my hands. Its my own xmas gift and I must get it! Thanks for the response and clarifications though. ChEers.

  2. Other than the prices on the play store for the nexus 4,the retail prices from other stores are not too bad. At Negri, it’s $398($350 on play store) for the 8gig and $448 for the 16gig. The prices from LG for local distribution shouldn’t be too far from these. However, Naija retailers are fond of wanting to make a kill by selling at exorbitant prices.

If I were interested in getting the nexus 4,I wouldn’t even wait for local sales. Will rather get someone to help me purchase from the play store at $350.

  3. My question is, are they pushing the Nexus 4 in any other African country? If not then it might be premature to presume it’s not going to be “pushed” on the Nigerian market – it could simply be a case of “not now, not yet”. It’s already out of stock in the USA, Canada and the UK; what’s the point of pushing a device when they can’t even supply those existing markets at the moment?

In that sense, I understand. I don’t believe it will never be introduced to the Nigerian market. If it wasn’t, that would be a matter to take up with whatever public relations entity represents Google in Nigeria.

  4. @Belushi
You may not even be able to ask somebody to buy it for you since Google has limited the number each person can purchase from the Playstore to two.
