Your beautiful iPhone has suddenly stopped responding to touch. You swipe, tap and stare, but nothing responds. The Home button does not work either. You have an unresponsive iPhone in your hands. Frozen. Do not panic though. These things happen. Even better, there are simple steps to force restart your iPhone and have it working fine again.
But first, what is a force restart? It is a procedure for making your unresponsive iPhone restart by making use of physical buttons. It is different from a soft reset that requires restarting a working, responsive phone. A force restart is needed when the software of the phone (in this case, iOS) freezes up and the phone is unusable.
What does a force restart do?
A force restart is generally related to the software functioning of a phone and is needed if your phone freezes and won’t display the power-off slider. Force restarting an unresponsive iPhone means that you will lose unsaved data in running apps, but the files (audio, video, etc) on your phone are not deleted or affected.
How To Force Restart Unresponsive iPhone: Plan A
The good news is that you can force your iPhone to restart. Just press and hold the Sleep/Wake button at the top until a red slider appears on the screen. Slide it to power off the device.

If Plan A above does not work, you should try this next. To reset your iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button at the top and the Home button at the same time. Hold the buttons down until the Apple logo appears, then let go. Your phone will restart and should function properly again.
Some newer iPhone models have different methods of restarting them. Here are some of them.

Will This Affect My Files?
No; carrying out a force restart will not wipe anything on your iPhone. All your photos, images, documents, music and videos will stay intact.
Don’t forget the default key combination: press and hold down the Sleep/Wake button + Home button down together till the Apple logo appears, then let go. Your frozen iPhone has thawed. If that fails, look at the alternative procedures provided.
Now you can lustily sing, ♫ “The cold never bothered me anyway!” ♫
