Ever since the first wheel-based vehicle was produced, people have been looking for ways to make their vehicles go faster. Now, this can be achieved by increasing the horsepower of the vehicle. There are other modifications you can make to your vehicle to make it go faster, but one of the first things you should do is increase horsepower of the vehicle.
Now, the basic principle to how engines work is this: your car engine takes in air along with a little fuel, ignites the mixture with an electrical spark, and the resulting combustion process increases the volume of the air and fuel. This process also produces heat, which make the gases in the chamber rapidly expand. The force of the rapidly expanding gases pushes the pistons down powerfully, and this turns a crankshaft, which in turn moves the car’s wheels.
There are several ways to increase horsepower on your vehicle. Here are some of them:
ADVANCE IGNITION TIMING
There are some cars that make use of distributor-type ignition. These engines can be modified to advance the base ignition by some degrees. This results in an improvement in power, as the engine becomes more responsive. If this is done right, the volume of gases in the cylinder expands at a faster rate, thus generating more power on the pistons. However, you would have to deal with knocking and pinging sounds from your engine a lot more frequently. To avoid this, switch to a higher-octane fuel.
HIGH PERFORMANCE ELECTRONICS
If your car has modern fuel injection, it might not have a distributor. In this case, it is likely controlled by a Powertrain Control Module. You can purchase an electronic tuning box to reprogram the ignition advance curve. This will make the fuel injectors add a little more fuel as it also advances the ignition timing.
LET IN MORE AIR
This is another step you must take to increase horsepower in your vehicle. You have to replace your stock 2-barrel intake manifold and carburetor with a 4-barrel intake manifold and carburetor. For cars with sequential fuel injection and coil-on-plug ignition, you will need to add a cold air intake kit.
COLD AIR INTAKE
Cool air is a lot denser than hot air. Thus, when your engine takes in cool air, it gets a lot more oxygen than it would from warmer air. The more oxygen gained, the more fuel can be added to the mix, thus more power is generated. A cold air intake kit will supply air to the engine directly from the grill area.
NITROUS OXIDE SYSTEMS
This is not cheap, and in some places it is not even legal. But a nitrous oxide system will provide more than enough oxygen to your engine. Nitrous oxide releases oxygen molecules when exposed to the heat of combustion. All that is needed is to supply extra fuel to the engine. Thus, you will need a bigger fuel injector.
