Instagram welcomes GIPHY in Direct Message

You can now use GIFs in Instagram Direct, thanks to a new feature powered by GIPHY.

December 2013 was when direct messages arrived for Instagram users. Since then, updates has been on to make direct messaging more homely and friendlier. Finally, Instagram has joined the train of major social media apps that allow users to use GIFs.

The social networking service announced the new feature. However, you will not be able to use it in your public feed. At least, not yet. You will be able to send GIFs in one-on-one messages and group messages.

About Giphy

Giphy is an online database and search engine that allows users to search for and share all sorts of animated GIF files.

After updating your app, you will see the new GIF icon. Clicking the button shows GIFs the same way it works on other social apps. A keyword search also lets you find GIF animations. You will also be able to see what GIFs are trending.

Instagram also announced that the Creator’s signature will be seen in the GIFs, and like IGTV, you will be able to find GIFs of a particular creator in “see all by creator” icon.

This feature has started rolling out to both Android and iOS devices.

I personally would have loved for these GIF to be available in the comment section of our feeds and not just in IG direct. That would have brought a whole new world of animation to our content. People love animation and this would have been great.

Nevertheless, I am positive about another GIF update soon. Instagram stories already has GIF so it won’t be long now. In the meantime, update your Instagram apps, people, and come tell us what you think of the new GIF support in messaging. That is, if you use Instagram Direct at all.
