iOS 12 beta was released some months back. Now, the full public release of iOS12 is here and it comes with a host of performance improvements and fun features, including a new iOS 12 wallpaper.
The big thing that everyone will enjoy regardless of their specific needs is the big performance improvements that Apple says iOS12 delivers across board. The company says that the camera launches up to 70% faster than on the previous version of iOS, the keyboard pops up to 50% faster and typing is smoother as well.
Apple says that apps can even launch up to twice as fast, depending on your usage scenario. The jury is out on all of these, of course, and we will have to wait for user reviews to see whether or not iOS12 lives up to these promises.
Performance improvement aside, some of the new features include new Augmented Reality (AR) experiences, Memoji, Siri Shortcuts, Apple Books, screen time management tools, and Voice Memos on iPad, among others. We look at them in greater detail below.
iOS 12 features
Here are some of the new major features of iOS 12.
Augmented Reality. Shared AR experiences, persistent AR and more dynamic object detection and image tracking.
Animoji, Filters, Text and Stickers in Messages and FaceTime.
Following in the footsteps of Android Pie’s Digital WellBeing apps, Apple has added a suite of features that help you manage notifications and the time you spend on your phone. These include: Screen Time, Do Not Disturb and Notifications.
Siri Shortcuts allow any app to now work with Siri. There is also the ability to use your voice to run any Shortcut. That sounds like it is going to be tons of fun.
Apple Books is a new app that helps you discover books and audiobooks easily. You will be able to browse and search for titles, as well as organise your collection.
Voice Memos is now available on iPad. It also supports iCloud sync.
Siri can now translate more than 40 language pairs and brings more knowledge of sports, celebrities, food and nutrition. Siri can also surface favorite photos by person, place, event, time and topic, and more.
With CarPlay, you can enjoy greater support for third-party navigation apps while driving. The information is displayed right on the dashboard of your vehicle.
Students will love iOS 12, as Wallet for iPhone and Apple Watch now supports their ID cards.
Location data for 911 in the United States is automatically and securely shared with first responders, providing faster and more accurate information to help reduce emergency response times.
