iOS 5 now available for download!

The much anticipated update to Apple’s mobile operating system, iOS, was released yesterday.

It comes with compatibility for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 1, iPad 2, iPod touch 2nd & 3rd gen. iOS5 comes with over 200 new features, including a Notification Centre, Reminders, iMessage, and Newsstand.

I have been trying to download my version for the 3GS for a couple of hours now which is a task on its own especially since everyone’s trying to download at the same time. I will publish my hands-on review of iOS5 later today.

Meanwhile, if you rely on a jailbreak, I will advise you to hold off on the update for now as only a tethered jailbreak is available now. The untethered jailbreak is set to be released tomorrow.

  1. Are idevices supported in Nigeria? Warranty, aftersales and all that. Does Apple reckon with Nigeria officially?

  2. @Austine: thanks for the update
@Sojimi: Apple does reckon with Nigeria. Recently they opened the online appstore to nigeria but I reckon it will take a while before they are in full swing. I have been using apple devices for a long while now and they can pretty much do anything they can do in the US.

  3. I’ve upgraded to iOS 5 since 13th of Oct (Thursday).

One thing to note is that the update is massive. About 716MB for my iPad 2. It took me less than 90 minutes on my 3.5G Glo Network! (Thanks Glo).

While upgrading, everyone should note to insert the carrier network SIM that came with the iPad otherwise the 3G radio would not work aft the update. In my case, I learnt the hard way! However, I corrected the problem by inserting the AT&T card that came with my iPad and doing a system delete and restoring. Now my Glo 3G works again.

The update itself after the initial took almost 30 minutes, but the restore from Back-Up took me a whole 1 hour 45 minutes.

The iOS 5 is an awesome update. It’s like I just bought a new device. I can now use my iPad without needing to press the home button! It’s awesome, if you ask me!

Final note; if your Internet network is slow, it’s preferable to download the ‘ipsw’ update via a download manager and update your device manually! You can get in touch with me on @dfewgoodmen on twitter for any questions on update!
