iTel it1516 Plus review: Quick Pros And Cons

Before we dive into the review proper, let’s have a quick look at the major pros and cons.

Key Features Cons
Long lasting 5,000 mAh battery. Loudspeaker audio quality is unimpressive.
Solid build with metal and plastic. No fast charge, so battery takes a long time to hit full charge
Bright and vibrant 5.5-inch display is great for reading, editing, viewing photos and watching videos. System software and apps take up almost half of internal storage
USB-OTG for using flash drives and other USB accessories

iTel it1516 Plus Review: Hardware/Design

The phone has a plastic shell and a nice brushed metal back cover that gives it a nice touch.

The rear of the phone has a 13 megapixel camera with dual LED flash. The top section of the back is plastic and removable to reveal the dual SIM slots and a microSD card slot. On the right side we have the volume rockers and the power/lock button. The 3.5mm audio jack port is at the top.

The rest of the back panel is metal and at the bottom is the loudspeaker grill. If interested, you can see our gallery of iTel it1516 Plus photos as well.

iTel it1516 Plus Review: Software

The iTel it1516 Plus runs a lightly skinned version of Android 5.1 Lollipop. There are some bloatware pre-installed. These include PalmPlay, PalmChat, CarlCare and others.

iTel it1516 Plus Review: Network, Telephony

Telephony on the iTel it1516 is okay. Voice calls are clear enough.

iTel it1516 Plus Review: Display and Multimedia

The display of the iTel it1516 Plus is bright and vibrant. It packs quite a punch.

iTel it1516 Plus review

The loudspeaker grill is at the bottom end of the back of the phone. Volume is good, but as with most budget smartphones, there is a clear lack of bass.

iTel it1516 Plus Review: Photography

The iTel it1516 Plus is not a great cameraphone. It is not a horrible one either. The 5 megapixel main camera does not produce the greatest details or the most accurate colour renditions. Same can be said for the front 2 megapixel camera. Both snappers produce images expected in the device’s class. No penalties here.

iTel it1516 Plus Review: Multitasking/Performance

There is no surprise that performance is not top notch. Like any budget product, the iTel it1516 Plus isn’t going to win any performance medals. You will observe pauses and lags here and there, especially when you launch an app. Multi-tasking is limited too. But these cannot be held against the device. It is standard performance in devices in its class. You can check out our iTel it1516 Plus benchmark tests results.

The it1516 has 8 GB internal storage. However, system software and apps take up almost half of internal storage. The good thing is that we were able to install our regular apps without any issues. There is also a microSD card slot to expand available storage. If you need to run a system software update, you need to have a memory card inserted.

The it1516 has USB-OTG built-in and it worked fine with out USB flash drives.

iTel it1516 Plus Review: Connections

The itel it1516 comes with dual-SIM GSM/WCDMA/HDPA network connectivity. There’s Bluetooth and hotspot functionality as well. We experienced an odd phenomenon though. When using the phone as a wireless hotspot, we were unable to turn on Bluetooth. We got a message that said, “When softap is enabled or is turning on, the bluetooth can not work”

SoftAP is an abbreviated term for “software enabled access point.” It is defined as software enabling a computer which hasn’t been specifically made to be a router into a wireless access point. This issue with the iTel it1516 Plus is odd considering that Android OS has wireless hotspot functionality built in.

Because of its solid battery, we regularly used it as a hotspot. That meant that we were unable to send or receive files by Bluetooth during those period. Odd. We have used tons of Android smartphones and not had this experience till now.

iTel it1516 Plus Review: Battery life

The 5,000 mAh battery is great when it is fully charged. You can go about your day’s activities without worrying about running out of power. If you are not a heavy user, the it1516 Plus will go beyond 24 hours on a single charge. But without fast charge available, getting it fully charged up – even from say 50% – is hard going. That is the only niggle about the 5,000 capacity battery. But leaving the phone plugged in all night is a good way around that.

When the phone is plugged and charging, the lock screen displays a nice animation of a plugged battery with an upward swirling fluid motion.

iTel it1516 Plus Review: Final Words

The iTel it1516 Plus is a solid budget smartphone. There is 3.5G internet. You get a bright display, plus a massive battery. In use, it fulfills its promise as a smartphone for the power-hungry user. The limited internal storage is perhaps its greatest weak point. But then, it is same for most of its competitors.

In its class of devices, the iTel it1516 Plus is a good one and gets 4 stars out of five from us here at Mobility Arena.

  1. Nice review. But i must be honest, like seriously? this device is a NO for me; its camera is poor same as its built in storage. iTel need to improve on their phones, they should use Tecno and Infinix as a case study.

  2. Hi Samuel,

Interesting submission. The it1516 may not be for you if you are used to better cameras and larger storage, but it meets a defined target market. You have to pay more for those things you specified.

I may be wrong, but I do not know of any TECNO or Infinix smartphones with similar specs to the iTel it1516 that do not cost significantly more. Let’s have a look at the TECNO L8 as an example:

    • 5,050 mAh battery
    • 1 GB RAM
    • 16 GB memory
    • Rear 8 MP / front-facing 2 MP cameras
    • Price: NGN 40,000

That’s NGN 15,000 costlier than the it1516. The iTel sounds like value-for-money. I may be missing something though. So, do share info about other similar products from TECNO and Infinix that are as affordable as the iTel it1516 for context. Cheers.

  3. At the price of 25,000 naira that the itel 1516Plus is selling, i think it is a steal if you are a power user.
Not forgetting also that power supply is epileptic at best…so this would be good for many people

  4. I was just looking around to see where the device is on the web, you need a lot of stuff here on the device. I am pretty sure iTel will stun us this year.

  5. Well Itel 1516 plus is the phone I am using presently,it’s a good phone for me and other Itel fans.
    10 stars for Itel
