Jolla, the Finnish company behind Sailfish OS, are restructuring and laying off 50% of their staff, as the company has run out of cash and has so far been unable to raise fresh cash to keep its operations running at full steam. Jolla is hoping that the lay-offs are temporary action, and that things will look up.
Jolla set out to continue with the legacy of Nokia’s Maemo/MeeGo OS. The result was Sailfish OS, which hasn’t gained much traction in the smartphone field. The current cash constraints may ultimately result in the death of Jolla, Sailfish OS, and whatever is left of the legacy of Maemo/MeeGo OS.
