What does Huawei’s Kirin 960 chipset bring to the table?

Huawei recently announced a new version of its new Kirin 960 chipset. By definition, a chipset is an integrated circuit that has the smartphone’s processor (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU), memory controller, modem, and others built into it. In layman’s terms, you could say that the chipset is the smartphone equivalent of the engine of a car.

Some of the more popular brands that make smartphone chipsets include:

  • Snapdragon – owned by Qualcomm
  • MT and Helio – owned by Mediatek
  • Exynos – owned by Samsung
  • Kirin – owned by Huawei

Huawei has stated that the Kirin 960 chipset will be first used in their latest flagship, the Mate 9. The Huawei Mate 9 has been launched and is being expected in Nigeria soon. The Huawei Mate 9 Lite is a stripped down version of the Mate 9 but does not sport the kirin 960 chipset. It uses the mid-range Kirin 655 chipset.

The company has confirmed though that some of its upcoming phone models will be powered by Kirin 960. Chances are that we shall see the kirin 960 chipset in the rumoured Huawei P10. The P10 is expected to hit the market in 2017.
