Lowcost Android 2.2 Tablet (Wonder Media)

As I mentioned in a previous post,I’ll be reviewing some Android phones and Tablet PCs. For those who read the “BRAVO to Android” post, recollect that I talked about Chineese products running on Android. The one Inwill be reviewing today runs on Android 2.2. I didn’t believe my eyes the first time I saw it on a website in June. Out of much curiosity, I decided to take the risk by placing an order for it (at least to try it out). It costed me $61 (N9,760 using 160/$) [excluding shipping costs] as at June, 2011 when I bought it. Below are some of the features of this low cost Tablet PC:

SETBACKS

  • The touch as for me is not sensitive enough. Unlike what is obtainable on the Samsung Galaxy Tab, iPad and other Tablets, when I tap icons, I usually have to tap them a couple times to get the device to respond.
  • It doesn’t come with a stylus pen (at least the one I bought). Though, I know of someone else who bought another model and found a stylus pen in his package (though more expensive than mine).
  • Poor Camera capability (understandle for a 1.3Mega Pixel Camera).
  • No windows driver… Can’t connect to PC.
  • Some apps I tried installing didn’t work (may be it’s the version’s problem).
Those are the major setbacks I personally have experienced with this device.
STRENGHTS
  • Runs Android 2.2
  • Supports Flash on Websites
  • Comes with numerous Wonder Media apps.
  • Supports USB. You can access data from a flash drive through a small external device that comes with it.
  • Affordable.

CONCLUSION
One strong point for this device is that it is one of the most affordable Android Tablet (if not the most affordable) that I have seen. It  provides Android fans an opportunity to enjoy the Android platform on a tablet without breaking the bank. So, if you have a very tight budget and at the same time want an Android powered device, you may want to try this one out. It’s now available in computer village (It’ll be $61+shipping cost+seller profit). Asides this, I prefer the Galaxy and other Android Tablets/phones (Galaxy tab review coming soon).

  2. Why wont Android be so popular? A tab for 61dollars? Tot the cheapest Android tab will be the one by Amazon. Well, for better experience, I think the Amazon tablet is very affordable at the 200dollars its expected to launch with.

  3. I think the greatest downside to this device is the resistive touchscreen. If they had managed to put a capacitive touchscreen on it and maybe increase the price a bit, it would have been a wonderful device in that price range.

The lack of PC driver would have been made up by the USB input support and given that it runs Android 2.2, that would be another big plus.

I rarely use the USB to link my phone to my laptop these days ever since I discovered the power of File Expert.

  4. File expert is a very good file manager for Android that you can use to link your phone and PC through the phone’s WiFi hotspot or any other available access point. You can then use your computer’s web browser to browse the content of your phone, move file between them and delete files and folders as well.

This is without any cable but rather through your WiFi connection. Of course you know that Android 2.2 and upward supports WiFi hotspot.

The application supports both http ftp protocols. You can even link other phones in this manner, but it must not be a proxy browser like opera mini and bolt browsers.

In fact every computer that has a web browser and WiFi hardware is supported – Windows, Linux, Apple Mac etc.
