NCC Wants Telcos To Roll Over Unused Data For Subscribers

When you purchase a data bundle and do not exhaust your allocated data within the given validity period, you lose whatever data you have left if you do not renew before expiration of the data plan. The Vanguard newspaper reports that the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has asked telecom operators to roll over unused data for their subscribers.

According to the news report, NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Prof. Umar Danbatta said:

“On this issue of data roll over, the Commission will soon issue a directive to the service providers to give 14 days window to the subscribers to enable them roll over their unused data, even if they do not renew on the expiration of data.

“In other words, this will stop the current practice where subscribers lose their entire unused data if they fail to renew on the data of the expiration of the current subscription.”

This will be good news to data subscribers across the country, especially those who have subscribed to a plan but are unable to use as much of the data as they would like because of poor quality of service. This category of subscribers constantly feel cheated of the subscription fees they paid.

When Will NCC Implement This?

The regulatory body has not given a specific time frame for implementing this yet, but it shouldn’t be too long.

The NCC Executive Vice-Chairman was said to have spoken about this at the 2017 Port Harcourt International Trade Fair.

    It’s so long overdue, though they’ll lose a lot from it. I guess it won’t be indefinite like voice call/sms
