If you have been longing for offline navigation on Google maps, you can leap for joy now – if you are an Android user. iPhone users will have to wait a bit. The updated app lets you download one area of the world or more to your phone, so you can use the maps app even when there is no internet connectivity available.
Before now, you could simply view an area of the map offline. The update now adds turn-by-turn driving directions, search for specific destinations, as well as useful information about places, like hours of operation, contact information or ratings. Nice! And more improvements are on the way.
The app switches to offline mode automatically once you are out of internet coverage, so you don’t have to fiddle with anything. However, downloading of maps happen over a Wi-Fi connection. That is Google trying to keep you from burning money on mobile data.
The update is being rolled out gradually and should hit your Android smartphone soon.
