With the official launch today in Kenya of TECNO’s much anticipated Phantom Z, it is now official that it runs Android 4.4 Kitkat.

There’s a true octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM too, and a large 3030mAh battery. Internal storage space is reported as 32GB.

The Phantom Z is reported to have a 5.2-inch 1080P AMOLED display and a 7.9mm thin unibody design.

Other features include a 16MP rear camera with flash and – wait for it – an 8MP front-facing camera WITH FLASH! Just weeks ago, I tweeted that it is about time that front-facing cameras started having flash.

If the above specs are correct, the TECNO Z is a device that one can only anticipate here in Nigeria with excitement.

  1. $410k….they sure don’t yet know their station in life..these TECNO folks..

  2. how ungrateful can you be? considering the specs of dat fone, if it were to be samsung, iphobe,bb,htc or xperia the price would be over a 100k nd its just 60k nd u say its too big…
    Nigerians and their greedy thoughts.

That’s not exactly correct, Sir. Can you give instances? Apart from the battery and the inclusion of SD SD card and yes, the cameras which may struggle to match those using say 8MP sensors like the Nexus 5, how is it really comparable to the products of the market leaders? Mind you, this device though reported to be equipped with octa-core procesors may not still match those equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processors of their recent models.

I’ve used Tecno devices and still using one and prepared to buy one tomorrow if the pricing is right. This has nothing to do with ungratefulness but Tecno products are not as durable as those top manufacturers you may be comparing them with and if I will be spending that much of money on a device, I would rather be spending it on those other brands.

I bought the original Tecno Phantom A in July of last year, that’s like two year and a few months after my first Android phone, an LG product. First, the charging port got broken in less than a year of use… while the LG charging port is still intact.

Also, the battery performance dropped rather too fast. Now, I can take such because of the price of the phone but I won’t spend up to 60K on a Tecno device nor will I recommend it to anyone else. Sure, their products may not lag behind the top manufacturers so much in performance, but the durability is not there or at least not comparable to the top guys.

  4. The major problem with tecno products is that they have small allocation of internal space to applications- not more than 1GB. So, very soon your phone runs out of storage space for applications. Too bad as you can’t move them to your SD card. Also, tecno has never revealed the weight of any of its smart phones including the upcoming phantom Z.

This is a problem I am experiencing on the Innjoo i1s as well. While I can move some apps to SD card, the limitation is grating. I finally hit that point where there are no more apps to move to SD card and the phone keeps returning an insufficient space error when I try installing some large apps.

  6. I won’t spend more than 35k on a Tecno phone, 60k? No I’d rather buy a Galaxy S4 of 70k.

  7. naaa….u only yell about weight,,mmmm sounds bad,,do u hav any plans to be carrin more than two?besides,,is weight going to help in anythng?

  8. Good response Harry; Tecno phones are popular in Nigeria and few other countries because of their comparatively low price and probably the dual SIM stuff that the big manufacturers are not popular with. You can’t compare tecno to the big guys in terms of durability, internal/apps memory, etc. While we expect tecno to improve on these, they should not think they have landed and start increasing their prices. They will only succeed to lose they teaming population of Nigerians who are currently patronizing their products. Don’t take us for granted – Tecno.
