BeepTool Oyi-1 phone is touted as a 1 dollar smartphone by the manufacturer. It is an entry-level smartphone targeting low income earners in Nigeria and Africa.
It features a 5-inch display, a lowly Mediatek processor, 1 GB RAM, 8 GB internal storage, a 5-megapixel camera at the back, and a 2,000 mAh battery. As you can see, it is the basics.
The software is a bit dated though. Android 7 Nougat is not exactly up-to-date, as the current version of Android is Android 9 Pie. In addition, Android 8 Oreo Go Edition would have been even better suited to a low-end device like this.
Let’s have a look at the specifications of Oyi-1 phone. We shall explore the pricing of this 1 dollar smartphone right after that.

How does the 1 dollar smartphone thing work?
Beeptool, the manufacturer, calls this the 1 dollar smartphone. The phone is available for pre-order for just N500. $1 is about N355 at the moment, so this is costing a little over a dollar.
Important info: Part of the terms and conditions of service says that if you get one, you are obligated to recharge your line with a minimum of NGN750 monthly in exchange for 1GB data and 30 minutes bundled local calling plan. Refusal to pay for connectivity in two consecutive months will lead to remote locking of the device and attempt to recover the device by BeepTool.
That explains how the manufacturer is able to offer the Oyi-1 for such a low cost. You pay part of the full cost of the phone in mandatory monthly recharge.
Also, according to Beeptool, the smartphone “generates advertising, survey and data revenue for investors and stakeholders. These fees are used to cover the true cost of the smartphone.” That suggests that users will run into ads on the phone.
BeepTool says Oyi-1 is their property for a period of 2 years after registration. This indicates that the full cost of the phone is recouped by the company after 24 months. You are also not allowed to repair any damage or defect of the device on your own without getting permission from the company. At any point in time, BeepTool may track the location of each Oyi-1 smartphone.
Thinking of getting one for yourself? Beeptool says that if you earn more than $50 per month, you are not eligible to purchase the Oyi-1 smartphone. It is uncertain how they will screen potential buyers to ensure that this criteria is adhered to.
If you do qualify and decide to proceed to get one, the manufacturer says that it will take 5-7 months for your pre-ordered Oyi-1 phone to be delivered. That is an awful long time for a device that already runs a dated software. And it is a long time to keep a buyer on a waiting line.
