If you own or drive a car, you likely have a regular USB car charger handy for topping up your phone on the go. But sometimes you also need to power your laptop, printer, camcorder, or portable work light while on the road. Enter Xantrex Xpower car adaptor, a portable micro inverter that lets you power mobile office equipment and home electronics in your vehicle.
It plugs into the cigarette lighter slot like any regular mobile phone charger. But instead of supplying a DC current, it supplies a 75W 230 AC current like a normal household wall outlet and has a two-pin AC receptacle (see photo below). There is a three-pin version too. You have to make sure you get the one that is compatible with your laptop power plug.
It is a good idea to have the air-conditioning running in your car when you use this, especially if you are in hot weather. This is to avoid building up heat.
I have found the Xantrex Xpower car adaptor a lifesaver on a few occasions when I have been out and about and running out of laptop battery power.
Now, I don’t have to worry anymore about my laptop running out of power while on the road.
I am not sure how much this gadget costs in the market, as I didn’t buy mine. I have done some search online but not found it either. Odd. Still, your search should turn up two or three alternative brands that you can buy.
PS: I got this unit courtesy of the National Centre for Energy Efficiency and Conservation (NCEEC), University of Lagos, Akoka, Yaba.
