Samsung Mobile has been hard at work developing a 200-megapixel camera, based on the ISOCELL HP1 sensor, for use in its upcoming smartphones, and a report from Korea says that work on it has been completed. The camera has been named ISOCELL HP2.

What to expect from Samsung’s 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP2 camera

  • 4×4 pixel binning
  • faster auto focusing
  • high dynamic range images
  • capture clearer photos in dark
  • 8K videos at 30fps
  • 4K slow-motion clips at 120fps.

All of these is to say that you can expect groundbreaking performance. It is true that megapixels is not all there is to producing quality images. But then, it is also true that it is what you do with all those megapixels that matter, and Samsung appears to have out in the work on this.

Which smartphones will use the ISOCELL HP2 200-megapixel lens first?

There is rumour that this new camera will feature in the next Samsung premium flagship, Galaxy S23 Ultra, similar to how the S22 Ultra 5G has an ISOCELL HM3 108-megapixel camera. If history is anything to go by, Xiaomi is likely to put this camera in at least one of their high-end models as well. The Chinese company has a reputation of Sampling high megapixel cameras from Samsung.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Pro, for example, was the first smartphone globally to use the ISOCELL HMX. And what a solid camera it turned out to be (see our Xiaomi Mi Note 10 Pro review and long-term review). Other Xiaomi camera phones have used a range of ISOCELL lenses.
