Battery life has always been a major concern for smartphone users. Among all the parameters of a mobile phone, breakthroughs in battery technology is playing catch up. This may soon be a thing of the past as researchers from Samsung have reportedly made some discovery on how to improve the stamina of widely used lithium-ion batteries.

In publication posted on Nature Communications, the study claims the new technology can enable batteries to offer up to 1.5 to 1.8 times higher capacity than current commercial lithium-ion batteries. This is possible through a new coating technique for battery cathodes that promises to overcome the limitations of current lithium ion batteries.

This involves the using of graphene to coat the silicon anode surface, increasing it’s density, and consequently increases the longevity of the battery. The whole process in still undergoing testing and will undergo more scrutiny before being used commercially. This might take a while, but it’s a step in the right direction .
