You may never have heard of So.cl, but it is shutting down

Chances are that you have never heard of Microsoft’s social media site, So.cl. You are not alone. The site was not that popular to begin with. Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter have more followers than the population of some countries. However, there are also some social media sites that are not as well-known as these giants. Microsoft’s So.cl is one of these sites. It will soon cease to be a social media site.

So.cl app

So.cl was created by Microsoft’s Fuse Labs in 2011. It looks similar to Google+ and borrows concepts from Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. It was originally established primarily for students. However, over time it became available for anyone interested. It was assumed that this would be Microsoft’s answer to Facebook. But it never really took off.

Microsoft’s Fuse Labs have announced that the site will shut down on the 15th of March. The company released a statement expressing gratitude to the So.cl community. Their blog post reads:

“So.cl has been a wonderful outlet for creative expression, as well as a place to enjoy a supportive community of like-minded people, sharing and learning together. In supporting you, So.cl’s unique community of creators, we have learned invaluable lessons in what it takes to establish and maintain community as well as introduce novel new ways to make, share and collect digital stuff we love”.

That is the end of So.cl as a social network. Too bad we had no idea it existed in the first place.
