The global smartphone market has become extremely competitive, especially as key markets get saturated. The US market is saturated. The Chinese is. The Indian market is on its way. Many mobile manufacturers are fixing their eyes on Nigeria next. TECNO Mobile (along with its siblings, Infinix and itel) has ruled the Nigerian market unchallenged for years now but the country has seen the arrival of new players like Xiaomi and OPPO. In addition, Samsung has a new, refreshing line-up of budget-focused smartphones in the market as well.

But TECNO has been quick to respond to the challenges with a stream of new, even more competitive phones. The TECNO Camon 12 is one of the 2019 Camon smartphones that TECNO has released into the market. You have seen quite a bit about the Camon 12 here on MobilityArena already, including: Camon 12: premium smartphone camera at a sweet price point, and The wait is finally over: TECNO unveils Camon 12 Series, ushering in a new Cam * era.

The Camon 12 is one of 3, the other two being TECNO Camon 12 Air and TECNO Camon 12 Pro. It occupies the middle position between the other two.

Visually, the Camon 12 is a striking device, thanks to the glossy nebula gradient paint job. It almost looks and feels like a premium smartphone and you would be forgiven for thinking it is.

It is a big smartphone too. It has a 6.52″ LCD IPS display fitted with thin bezels around it. The front camera is a 16 MP shooter with dual LED flash. Flip it over and you are greeted by a triple camera array at the back, a fingerprint scanner adjacent that, and the TECNO branding at the bottom left edge.

The triple camera has a lens combination of 16MP + 2MP + 8MP and has a quad LED flash to support it for low-light photography.

On the inside is 64GB of storage, 4GB of RAM, and a 4000mAh battery. There is a dedicated memory card slot that supports micro-SD cards of up to 256GB capacity, so if you need more storage space, just pop in a card. Powering it is a Mediatek Helio P22 chipset.

The box is in white and is quite striking with the image of Camon 12 boldly imprinted on it. Inside the box are the phone itself, SIM ejector tool, warranty card, documentation, charger plug, USB cable, a nice, branded transparent silicon case, and a 3.5mm audio earpiece.

The Camon 12 has everything covered on paper and offers a respectable package for the ₦47,500 price tag it commands in the market.

The Camon 12 looks really good. It has a good feel to it too when held in the hand. As already mentioned, it is a big device, but then that 6.52-inch display is not small either. Depending on wherre you stand, you will like or dislike the waterdrop notch, but this is 2019 and it is a defining trait of today’s smartphones.

The display is of only 720 x 1600 pixels in resolution, which is low. But from what we have seen of it, this isn’t something to be held against it. The display is bright and clear. Plus, that low resolution will help produce very long battery life, as the processor has less pixels to push.

On the software side, the Camon 12 has TECNO’s custom user interface, HiOS, running on top of Android 9. We are also pleased to see that the phone has a gaming mode. Those who do gaming on their smartphone will be pleased about this.

We put a Glo 4G SIM card inside and the phone latched on to a 4G connection without issues, so Glo users will be happy to know that the Camon 12 works with Glo 4G.

After setting up, we can testify that both the fingerprint scanner and face unlock are extremely fast for unlocking the phone. Unlocking takes but a moment, which is nice. Everything else feels snappy. Of course, it is a new phone.

As we put it to further use over time, we will arrive at our final verdict, but the first impressions are quite good. The Camon 12 has a good start impressing.

TECNO’s Camon smartphones have been huge successes in the market, driving much of sales in recent years, and it does not look like the Camon 12 is about to mess up that winning streak. How well it performs is what our review will reveal. We are on it already and the detailed review will be out soon enough, so don’t go anywhere.
