UMI Plus Review: Quick Pros And Cons
Before we dive into the review proper, starting with the major pros and cons.
|Beautiful design and solid, premium build||Loudspeaker audio quality is unimpressive.|
|Big, crisp 5.5-inch display is great for reading, editing, viewing photos and watching videos.|
|Fingerprint sensor in Home button|
|Runs pure Android OS, so no bloatware|
UMi Plus Review: Hardware/Design
The UMi Plus is one heck of a beautiful device. The aluminum body is well crafted and feels good in the hands. It is a solid smartphone in the hand. The display is beautiful and smooth and has curved edges.
The rear of the phone has a 13 megapixel camera with Samsung 3L8 sensor, and dual LED flash. On the left hand side is the eject-able dual-SIM compartment. One of the slots can also take a microSD card. Below the card compartment is a custom button that you can assign to any task. On the right side we have the volume rockers and the power/lock button.
At the bottom edge of the front of the phone is a hardware Home button that also houses a fingerprint scanner. Two loudspeaker grills sit astride the USB Type-C port at the bottom of the device, while the 3.5mm audio jack port is at the top.
UMi Plus Review: Software
The UMi Plus runs pure Android 6 Marshmallow. There is no bloatware pre-installed. This is Android OS as Google wants you to have it. UMi is already testing the Android 7 update for the UMi Plus and says it will arrive phones before end of the year.
UMi Plus Network, Telephony
Telephony on the UMi Plus is amaze-balls. Audio is deep and rich. Very good quality. Callers at the other end also notice the superb quality too. In weak network coverage areas, it held very firmly to the available signal.
The Plus works with MTN, Etisalat, Smile and Ntel 4G LTE networks. You can have a look at the details of our UMi Plus 4G tests.
Being pure Android OS though, there is no option to peg network mode to 4G only. As such, the phone will cycle through 2G, 3G and 4G as network conditions dictate.
UMi Plus Review: Display and Multimedia
The UMI Plus has a rich, impressive 5.5-inch 2.5D curved display. It is one of the better smartphone displays out there. The display comes out really sharp with rich colors. Viewing angles are great too. And the display feels good to touch. There is solid protection as well in the form of DinoRex Glass, which does the same thing as Gorilla Glass.
Despite the dual speaker grills at the bottom end of the phone, loudspeaker audio quality is one area in which the UMi Plus is weak. Audio is loud but it isn’t of the great quality that we would drool over. There is no audio headset cable in the pack we have, but plugging in a god headset results in very good music experience.
UMi Plus Review: Photography
The UMi Plus is not a great cameraphone. It is not a horrible one either. The main camera does not produce the greatest details or the most accurate colour renditions. At the end of the day, the UMi Plus will be listed among good cameraphones, but not exceptional ones.
UMi Plus Review: Multitasking/Performance
In everyday use, the UMi Plus performs smoothly. It has a 2.0 GHz Helio P10 processor and 4GB of RAM after all. It handles heavy multitasking well. It warmed up a bit during really heavy usage, but it wasn’t anything serious.
As for benchmark tests, on AnTuTu, it scores 49,375. We thought that was a little below expectations. But since the device runs smoothly in actual use, we let that go. You can see our benchmark test results HERE.
UMi Plus Review: Battery life
With a 4,000 mAh battery, the UMi Plus didn’t have us worrying about running out of power during a work day. And with fast charge built in, battery performance and charging are strong points of this beautiful device.
UMi Plus Review: Final Words
The UMi Plus is a very solid and beautiful device. It ticks all the right boxes, except for loudspeaker audio quality. What we have here is an excellent display, 4G LTE, good performance, good battery life, decent cameras, large internal memory plus memory card slot, Android Marshmallow with Nougat confirmed to be on the way already, all wrapped up in a solidly built metal unibody.
We have had our eyes on UMi for a while. On paper, their smartphones have intrigued us as offering good value for money. The UMi Plus is our first experience with one and it has exceeded our expectations.
