WhatsApp: Who is afraid of Telegram?

Posted by

Users are reporting that WhatsApp is blocking links that point to rival instant messaging app, Telegram. Basically, any URL entered in WhatsApp app that contains the domain “telegram.com” is not only unable to be clicked, the message in which it is entered is also not able to be copied or forwarded. Wowzer!

Reports say this doesn’t happen with any other links or URLs. What exactly is WhatsApp up to now? Interestingly, this only happens in the Android app. Is somebody at WhatsApp afraid that its users will defect to Telegram? Are we gearing up for a new anti-competition war, this time in instant messaging?

  1. that’s an anticompetitive stance, not disabling the links doesn’t mean they’re promoting the competition
