When your phone does not recognise international dialling prefix

Posted by Mister Mobility

You have many of your contacts saved with an international dialling prefix e.g. +234807xxxyyyy. Some others are in standard format e.g. 0807xxxyyyy. So, you get this phone that you like, but notice that when a number that you have saved with an international dialling prefix calls you, the phone does not display caller ID. But if you have an incoming number saved in standard format, the caller’s name is displayed.

Is there something one can do to make a phone recognise contacts saved with an international dialling prefix? Feel free to share how this can be addressed on the different platforms that you have used. No; please do not suggest that one edits one’s contacts. Some people have thousands of contacts.

Thanks for your contributions.

  1. The phone wouldn’t be a hauwei phone by any chance? maybe replacing the dialer app with something like Go contacts might help.

  2. This happens often, and has happened pretty much on every OS I’ve used.

As a rule, I save almost all of my numbers using the International dialling prefix, been doing it for years.

But I find that I can call the same person and my number doesn’t necessarily show up same way all of the time. It has come up as “unknown”, as a local number, or as a short code number or a totally foreign number. It works the same in reverse.

I think it may have to do with how the call is routed, not with the phone’s OS or dialler. I get the impression it varies according to the network.

  3. I experienced same for the first time weeks back when i bought my Opsson P6. But the annoyance was more when i received sms with numbers in international format not showing their stored names. A suggestion given was to delete Google account, then re-add and synchronize, did so and it kinda worked. But seems problem has resurfaced…but only occasionally with sms. For phone calls received or dialed their names are recognized whether local format or international.

I really doubt your assumption , as a rule of thumb i have been saving all my numbers in the international number format from 2006 (Symbian) up to this point (Android) and i have never encountered this problem until i switch to That Etisalat (Hauwei or ZTE) dual sim phone, it got the name display right during calls but not with sms. i have used quite a number of Nokias and Samsung devices over 8 years now and i haven’t experienced this with their devices

  5. Thanks YA for raising this. i was asking myself three days ago, if here is a way by which I can raise this challenge on mobility.ng

I have never experienced this on any of the os I have used until iPhone.

It was embarrassing to send sms to someone and he calls back and you are asking, who am I talking to? And he goes like what kind of question is that, didn’t you just smsed me now?

I asked someone. The only suggestion he gave was that I should also save the numbers both in the standard format and with the international dialing format. I have ended up with multiple numbers under same name.

I noted that I can not have the string of SMS together.nif I sent one from the standard number, the reply will be under another number (same but in another format)

I am questioning the excellence of iPhone if basic behaviour you expect of basic phone cannot be realized on it.
I am even searching for an app, if there is, that can solve the problem.

If anyone has solution to this, I will be glad to get it here.

  6. Been having strange behaviour regarding some contacts not showing up with the correct names.

I would have contacts on Whatsapp saved, and when they send a message, the name would not show… Just the number.

This happened since I started using the Tecno Phantom A III ..

I have have been at sea as to what was amiss until I saw this post..

Now, I wonder if this Android app would help….

  7. Just used..

    Twitch for android

to change all my contacts to intermational format

    And also used …

    Contact Remover for Android

    ….to remove all the duplicates.

    Now all well….;-)

  8. At the expense of not mentioning every single phone nor the various geographical locations I have used my mobile phones for well over a decade, this is my experience on every OS I have used (BB7, Android, iOS, Symbian and WP).

Feel free to disagree. Everyone’s experience may be different, but I am still of the opinion that it has to do with how calls are routed by the networks.
