Why DropBox needs to upgrade their BlackBerry app

Dropbox
DropBox is my de facto Cloud storage service. I use it on PC, on tablet and on all mobile platforms. It does an excellent job for me. I use devices from a wide variety of platforms and manufacturers, so I cannot afford to be tied down to proprietory Cloud services. Take that iCloud Google Drive, and SkyDrive! 🙂

My Blackberry is my mobile office. It gets the job done for me better than any other device I have

But the DropBox app for Blackberry is just too limited in functionality. It allows one to upload only photos. Just photos. No videos. No Office documents. No PDF files. I don’t get it. You develop a cloud storage file for a platform that was built around enterprise/business needs, and then users can only upload pictures with it?

The interesting thing is that of you already have any other file types on your DropBox folders, the BlackBerry app recognises them and let’s you download them. But for uploads, the only option I can find is that to upload a photo. I can’t upload a Word document I just modified? Strange.

DropBox, please fix your BlackBerry app. As far as I’m concerned, it is an unfinished job.

I believe you mean unfinished job there.

This is probably a reflection of where the world is headed in terms of platform adoption or maybe the features present or lacking in the app is based on their study of what BB users at large are doing with their phones. Business decision you know. It have to worth their while devoting and resources adding any feature the app.

  2. Unless the uploaded files are actually verified for file type (jpeg, bmp, etc), a way to circumvent this limitation may be to rename non_photo files to extension like “.jpg”, “.bmp”, “.tif”, “.png”~ before uploading.

A minor inconvenience, if that would work..

Most times they are. I’ve already tried that with Whatsapp and it wouldn’t pass it through, complaining that the file is either corrupt or not an image file. I tried MP3 extension and I got the same error message, then I resigned.

  4. Why are some apps made better/more functional on some OSs than others? Could it be the OS problem (limitations)? I have noticed this across platforms. Yahoo messenger for example on blackberry has less features compared to the one on android.

Sometimes, the OS may not expose necessary facilities (APIs) for developers to get some things done (elegantly).

Some other times, the Developer may not reckon much with the platform.

take SlideIt keyboard app for Symbian, the Android version is far better. simply because more effort has been put into that version. Apparently, Dasur (the Developers) considered (and still consider) Android more promising as. a platform

  6. The limitation of drop box app for blackberry is an indication of what the majority of blackberry users do with their phones – pinging. I have friends that use blackberry but don’t even know the term “app”
