We now have an official name for the next version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system: say hello to Windows 10 Mobile. This is the third name change since the original mobile OS was pushed out in 2000 as “PocketPC 2000”. It was later renamed Windows Mobile in 2003. A new OS named “Windows Phone” was launched in 2010.
Microsoft has stated that Windows 10 Mobile will offer the following:
- universal Windows 10 apps to mobile devices i.e. smartphones and tablets (up to 8 inches)
- ability to use some mobiles like a PC when connected to a larger screen
- compatibility with Android OS and iOS apps via Project Astoria
A release date is yet to be announced, but if you have a compatible device, you will get a free upgrade from Windows Phone 8.1 to Windows 10 Mobile if you upgrade within the first year of release.
