Our Xiaomi Mi 4 review points out the pros and cons of this beautiful Android smartphone that winks at you every moment of the day.

The Xiaomi Mi 4 is a beautifully crafted Android smartphone with top end specs. It is a clever piece of work that is very close to perfection.

What the guys at Mi have done is craft an Android flagship that looks and feels like Apple’s iPhone from hardware to software. The product is a beautiful gadget that winks at you every moment of the day. We are experimenting with a new review format for our Xiaomi Mi 4 review. We hope you like it.

Lying on a desk, it begs you to look closer, to pick it up, and to use it. In your hands, it feels just as good as it looks. Wake up the display and explore the UI (MIUI 7.0) to discover that Android OS has been heavily skinned to look and act like iOS. This is like having your cake and eating it. At least some of it. Here are 7 reasons why you should buy the Mi 4 and 2 reasons why you might be tempted to stay away from it.

Xiaomi Mi 4 review Review:: Reasons to buy

1. It is a very solid smartphone. It has a mix of metal and plastic with clean, iPhonesque design lines.
2. The display is vivid and bright, though with a warm hue.
3. With a 5-inch display, it fits just perfect in the hand.
4. It has a beefy 3,080 mAh battery that keeps it powered on for most of the day.
5. The loudspeaker (grill at the bottom end) produces really, really good audio quality.
6. The Mi 4 ‘ s camera is superb, producing very good photographs. I shall publish some of the shots I took in another post.
7. The iOS-like UI is sweet to use. Think of the simplicity of the iPhone without any of its numbness. Hallelujah.

Xiaomi Mi 4 review Review: The Cons

1. For a smartphone with a quad-core 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM, the Mi 4 sometimes pauses while typing or switching between apps. In some cases, apps have shut down on me during use. It happens often enough for it to bother me. Lower spec’d smartphones run smoother than this.
2. The Mi 4 still runs Android 4.4.4 KitKat (which just might be part if why the above issues happen). This also means that certain apps that require Lollipop and above do not work e.g. Apple music. Why a 2014 flagship is yet to get a Lollipop update beats me. Update: Mi has announced an upcoming Android 6 Marshmallow update for the Mi 4, so this is suddenly looking even more delicious.

While I won’t consider this a con, do note that the Mi 4 does not have a microSD card slot. You can check out the full specs HERE and our unboxing here.

Now you know the pros and cons of the Xiaomi Mi 4. It retails for around N56,000, which sounds like a real bargain. Over to you: are you getting one or not?

  1. Mr. Mo, update the phone already nau, MIUI 7 is available for the phone. I’m sure that will solve the app crashes and pauses.

16GB is just ok, IMO, phones are not designed as a back up external drive. I’m not an app junkie, important files are stored in the cloud, i don’t keep music files (I’ll rather listen to radio) and my movies are stored on a USB OTG flash drive. Even though my current phone has a 16GB SD card installed, it’s mostly empty.

So at that price, the Xiaomi is a good buy.

  2. BIOLA,

This unit has MIUI 7 running already. I check the phone for updates daily. None. And if you’re talking about a manual update, nobody got time for that. This is 2015: any updates should be OTA and easy.

  3. Oh, seems the MIUI 7bfor the Mi4 is based in Android 4.4. Thank goodness it will be getting marshmallow in the nearest future.

I’m not a fan of manual updates too, but I find myself going that route at times. It’s better than no updates at all.
