In the late hours of Wednesday, it was confirmed that the Mobile World Congress (MWC), one of biggest smartphone tech shows of 2020 was cancelled due to fears of the deadly coronavirus. This was made public by organizers of the event.

A statement from GSMA, the organizers of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) read “With due regard to the safe and healthy environment in Barcelona and the host country today, the GSMA has cancelled MWC Barcelona 2020 because the global concern regarding the coronavirus outbreak, travel concern and other circumstances, make it impossible for the GSMA to hold the event.”

This news comes as a surprise to smartphone lovers, as just days ago, GSMA announced that the MWC will still go on despite some of the biggest tech companies pulling out of the event. Companies like Amazon, Sony Ericsson, MediaTek, LG and a host of others had already withdrawn from the event due to the active threat of coronavirus.

A number of other companies like Xiaomi had taken certain precautionary measures towards travelling due to the threat of the coronavirus. With the health and safety of thousands of exhibitors at the conference more important at this point in time, cancelling the Mobile World Congress till the coronavirus outbreak has been effectively handled is a wise move for all parties.
