If you missed the smartphone revolution, you might not be familiar with the concept of exclusive sales partnerships. Essentially, a smartphone brand strikes a deal with a wireless carrier or mobile operator to carry and sell their smartphones exclusively in a country or region. As an example, when the first iPhone was launched in 2007, Cingular was the largest wireless carrier in the US, and was Apple’s exclusive US carrier partner for the iPhone. Cingular is now known as AT&T.
Other phone brands had similar exclusive partnerships, too. It is no longer a popular thing today in 2022, but Nothing is looking to leverage on the concept in marketing the upcoming Nothing Phone 1. The company has announced Virgin Media O2 as exclusive operator partner in the United Kingdom, and Telekom Deutschland as exclusive sales partner on Germany.
