Combat “Manterrupting” with Women Interrupted app

Interrupting women when they talk is a mistake that a lot of people make every day. However, most men don’t even know when they do that. Fortunately, there’s an app to tell them that now. The app is called Women Interrupted.  It is an app designed to help users know the rates in which men cut off and overpower women while they speak.

According to the Journal of Language and Social Psychology (May 2014), men interrupt women 23 percent more than they interrupt men. To combat this behavior, ad agency BETC Sao Paulo created Women Interrupted. The app listens to conversations and tracks how often men interrupt women.

The developers of the app want to show that “manterrupting” happens more often than people think. Also, the developers want to spark more debate over the behavior. The ultimate goal is to put an end to it.

The inspiration for the app came from one of the US Presidential debates. During that debate, Republican nominee (now US president) Donald Trump interrupted Democratic nominee Hilary Clinton 51 times. Another example of women interrupted by men is rapper Kanye West’s interruption of singer Taylor Swift’s VMA award speech in 2009.

Here’s how the app works. After downloading the app, it prompts the user to to record their voice so that the app would recognize it in future conversations. The app then runs in the background whenever the user is in a conversation. It uses the smartphone microphone to analyze conversations and identify interruptions.

BETC Sao Paulo co-CEO, Gal Barradas spoke about Women Interrupted in a press release. She said:

“We, women struggle every day to get our space in the workplace and the right to express ourselves. When we get there, Manterrupting reduces our participation. At first glance, it may seem like a small problem, but it reflects deeper issues of gender inequality at work and in society. The app is a way of showing that, in fact, the interruption is real and alarming”
