Two superb value for money mid-range smartphones slug it out in this Samsung Galaxy A20 vs Redmi Note 7 comparison review, and just perhaps this world-famous super mid-ranger by Xiaomi will get its butts whooped here.

We have in the ring the 3GB/32GB variant of the Redmi Note 7, seeing as the Galaxy A20 has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. That way, the match is even. Both the Redmi Note 7 3GB/32GB and the Galaxy A20 are built to be durable and cost below ₦60,000. Their displays are 6.3 and 6.4 inches respectively. They both pack a 4000mAh battery and fast charging. They both run Android 9 Pie, and that is where the differences begin.

Let’s talk about the camera specs here on neutral ground. While on paper, the Redmi Note 7 has the higher specc’d cameras, we already know that numbers don’t count in camera performance. For example, the main camera on the Galaxy S9 Plus is a 12MP camera, yet the 48MP camera of the Redmi Note 7 doesn’t come close in terms of details, colour reproduction and more.

So, I am not giving the camera slugfest to either of these contestants. Actually, if experience is anything to go by, I am willing to bet that the Samsung Galaxy A20’s camera will one-up the Redmi Note 7’s in a number of areas, and vice versa.

We do know that the Galaxy A20’s camera suffers in low light, which is something that the Redmi Note 7 handles well. But the Redmi Note 7’s camera is fond of whiting out the background in a number of other scenarios. You see what I mean. I am not awarding the camera slugfest to either phone. Feel free to swing where your preferences lie.

So, let’s now move on to examine the features where each phone shines.

Where Samsung Galaxy A20 has the edge

The Galaxy A20 has a punchier display – AMOLED displays give you punchier colours and deeper blacks. Thery are also rare on budget phones, so the A20’s display is something of a novelty. But it has a lower resolution than the Redmi’s, which is a bummer. That means you will sometimes see less details. Still, it has been adjudged as having the best display in its class [1].

If you want to use a memory card in your mid-range smartphone without sacrificing one SIM card, the Samsung has got your number. It is dual SIM and has a dedicated microSD card slot that supports up to 1TB size cards. That is huge compared to the 256GB limit on the Redmi. Plus, you have to sacrifice one SIM card in order to use a memory card on the Redmi.

Also, while The Samsung has only 15W charging compared to the Redmi’s 18W, Xiaomi includes only a 10W charger in the box with the Redmi Note 7. That means out of the box, the Samsung has faster charging. Even if you have a higher rated 3rd party fast charger, there is no guarantee that teh Redmi Note 7 will charge faster than 10W. In all our tests with 3rd party 18W fast chargers, the Redmi Note 7 only charged at 10W speeds. Don’t ask me what the issue is. I have no idea either.

Lastly, in terms of looks, the Galaxy A20 has a better looking, more premium design.

Where Redmi Note 7 has the edge

Redmi Note 7 specifications

The strongest win of the Redmi Note 7 is its durability. This is the smartphone that refuses to crack or shatter or scratch under many scenarios. No; it is not indestructible. But pound for pound, it will take more beating than the Samsung.

The other key area is performance. The Snapdragon 660 processor in the Redmi Note 7 leaves the Samsung’s EXYNOS 7884 processor in the dust. It is no contest here: the Redmi Note 7 will handle heavier tasks better and smoother.

Samsung Galaxy A20 vs Redmi Note 7: Who Wins?

There is a ₦6,000 price difference between the two smartphones. That is significant for bargain hunters, and I can tell you upfront, that buyers in that category will simply go for the more affordable device, which is the Galaxy A20.

Those who want better performance and greater durability from their smartphone will squeeze out that extra ₦6,000 and buy the Redmi Note 7.

And so we come to the end of our Samsung Galaxy A20 vs Redmi Note 7 comparison review. If you were out shopping for a mid-range smartphone under N60,000 now, which of these two would you pick?
