1GB data for N1,000 monthly on Airtel?

We received the following heads-up from deoladoctor earlier this morning:

I just got an sms from airtel on my airtel line thus:

Internet plan for smartphones now available on Airtel! Enjoy 1000MB data allowance, valid for 30days, at N1000 ONLY. Activate now by dialling *141*712*4#

Meaning their 1Gb for a month is now reviewed downward to N1000. I am currently on the same 1Gb/30days for N3000 hence have to wait for expiration before trying out this new rate. Pls confirm if you have not got the sms yourself.

We haven’t confirmed this independently, and we ask that you holla if you have any further info on this. The smartphone plan used to cost N3000 monthly till now. However, if this price slash is true, mobile internet in Nigeria will simply never be the same again.

  2. This is good news indeed. I pray the slash extends to their bis plans as well. Perhaps, paying 1000 naira for 1gb wudnt be a bad idea for bb users. Big ups, airtel!

  3. Infact, this settles my choice faster. I am going to change my wife’s phone today and was still battling with either a BB or a Nokia Eseries. Now my mind is made up on d good old Nokia, with 1Gb data tethered to Lappy, it’s far better than BIS

  4. I got the message yesterday and it came as a pleasant shocker but I was also looking out for confirmation. Now that someone else has confirmed receiving the same message at least it is confirmed to be from Airtel. The only thing now left is to confirm that the 1000MB is not a deliberate typo for 100MB.

    Do you note that the new activation code(*141*712*4#) is different from the previous plan (*141*712*10#)?

  6. Not been able to confirm this and am yet to receive the sns on my AirTel line..

    Could the 1000Mb be a typo? Perhaps they meant to put 100Mb?

  7. All we need is someone to actually try it and confirm if it’s true or not.

    I have never used an Econet/Vodacom/Celtel/Zain/Airtel sim before, and i’ve heard their 3G services are not very good. But I definitely won’t mind trying this if it turns out to be true.

  8. If this is true. Then internet will never be the same. I will how ever wait for other networks to implement this cause airtel internet service is RIDICULOUS in most parts of lagos.
    Glo and mtn should respond ASAP.

    And I must add, that it is a very welcomed development in the mobile internet space. This is something we have waited for- a provider really shaking things up and not simply repeating what others have done.

  11. I’ve used primarily an Airtel line in the Lekki axis of Lagos for about 3-1/2 years and have very few complaints. Calls are clear and I only see the dreaded ‘congestion’ when I’m calling other networks. I’d love to know how to tether my laptop via BIS or if its even possible and I’ll certainly investigate the offer.

    If what u said is true, then an apology is needed from airtel for the misinformation. Or could it be that they’ve not programmed their system before sending out texts to consumers?

    As I mentioned in the mail sent to mobilitynigeria this morning, I have no way of verifying as my 1Gb/30days for N3000 has not expired.

  13. I’ve no issue(s) with your intention to pass information that you benefit others. My problem is with Airtel for the negligent misstatement. Lets hope they readjust things fast.

  14. I took the liberty of checking Yomi’s Guide to Mobile Internet in Nigeria and behold, the code sent yesterday by Airtel is there, and its for Zain lite which is 100Mb for 30 days. I started doubting my sanity and eyesight but on going back to the text, its just as i stated in the mail to mobilitynigeria. I doubt if my Samsung Wave has the ability to add a zero after the 100 to give 1000Mb stated in the text.

    Aside from myself and Harry Echemco, anyone else got this text?

  16. @david-leo. i think you can use ur phone with the airtel 1000/1GB/month plan on your system but be sure to turn off automatic updates. Their coverage is good enof arnd lekki-ajah axis.

    @all. it would seem like it was either a mistake or a deliberate marketing attempt to mislead customers on airtel’s part. i love the network but i hope CPC is listening.

  17. @ebi bozimo. i don’t think it’s possible to do that. i was curious about it one time. the BIS network APN is redirected via your phone network’s APN. so there’s no way of configuring a connection that would use the BIS directly. If you use your phone’s network APN, you would just be paying double. Mayb am wrong and someone has found a way – with IT, there’s always a way. 😉

  18. i was so happy when i saw this topic on Twitter..what a letdown by Airtel!!! they would have been amazed by the way their sim sales would increase iif it had been true. i have spent 4k already this month on the grossly inadequate 100mb MTN plan. my android phone drinks it up in no time…..can’t these network see an obvious need in the market and fill it?

  20. @hamer07. why dont you get the 3000/1GB/month plan with the *141*712*10# string. this way, u could save yourself 7k. I, for one, dint get the text message that’s been talked about.

  21. @hamer07… the smartphone market is increasing and requires a data plan that can give us like 1gig for a reasonable price as all those their 100mb/150mb/month plan are just inadequate. Also their next level plans hovering around 5k – 8k are too expensive. The airtel 1gig/1k is not a typo…its had the intended effect…. drawing attention!

  24. Even if it were true, i doubt i’ll use it cause its so slow, i am even regretting the 3k/1g data plan cause its over slow. These airtel guys don’t want to improve their infrastructure instead they are giving all that money to RKelly and 2Face

    The info is not true. Airtel mistakenly sent wrong message by text. They sent me an email retracting the text message and giving apology. Whether it was a deliberate or genuine mistake is left for anyone to guess.

  26. I have also bundle for my ofice modem again today. Go for it if you want it, at i am not asking for anything from anyone and only just sharing what i know which is what tech forums are known formost of them xda-developers, modaco, and gsm-hosting, all of which i an a humble member.

    this bundle works 24/7 for me and a couple of my friends who have tried it. its even the bundle on my galaxyS phone. i.e its same bundle i used for my 1:53pm post above.

  28. i dont think its their billing system error because it’s states “welcome to 3072mb all-day for 30days, will expire on —–” or something similar.
    I also think it may be the bundle being used by sim reg operatives to enable them sync with airtel framework at all times be it day or night at a cheaper cost.

    I should have gently gone for my 1Gb/N3000 again but the 3gb/N2500 you mentioned was really tempting so I went for it. Guess what happened, I was able to use the plan on phone for only about 3 to 4 hours only. Now I have 3063Mb till 13th June, and it would not work night or day. I also have N2230 on my Acct. 1 which I can use only to call Airtel lines. And worse still I can’t use any other plan till this non browsing data expires on 13th June. The data just sitting on my Airtel account not usable. I think I’ve been had.

    1. I think the 3063mb stuff was free as i got 8724mb which i couldnt finish before it expires, i also got N14992 credit to call Airtel numbers only which still remains N5856.05 now. check your settings or go here dmc.ng.airtel.com

  30. Please check your settings, make sure your user name and pw is set as “internet”(and not left blank).
    Zain’s network is also not as good as mtn/glo.
    for you to verify if its your bundle or network that’s the problem, take another zain line and try to use it as PAYU or do a N100 bundle (i ‘ve had to do this before), you will most likely find out that its the airtel data network that has the problem.

    Sorry, just realised my last post was a comment on a different article. The problem is solved and am enjoying the data day and night since two days now. I called the costumer care and was really impressed by their service. In addition to the data, I also have the N2500 credited to my Acct 1 for use to call Airtel lines.

    Airtel really rocks. I think am going to find a way of getting out of MTN’s clutches.

    I am loving these Airtel guys.

    1. i can confirm that it works at all times.though i didnt get the 2500 airtime to my account 1 to call airtel lines.anyways i am enjoying my 3GB data! my Android is finally happy!

    1gb – N3000,
    3gb – N5000, and many other bundles typical to zain full bundle types except for the 3gb @ N5000 bundle.

    Yet another billing gaffe by AirTel currently allows 1 Gigabyte for FREE for a month!

  38. Airtel you are not trust worthy. you promise 1gbp for #1000, when typing *141*1*712*4#, but when I typed you load me with only 200mb, this is robbery. I will opt out but refund my money.

  39. Hey guys, d airtel data slash 4 1GB is true and its working perfectly.. Airtel’s 1GB/#3000 per month has been slashed to 1GB/#1,200 per month and its working nice and fast..
