The year will be running to an end in a few days. In rounding up things, here is our list of the very best smartphones of 2014.
6.) TECNO Phantom Z
The final words of Mr. Mo in his review of the phantom Z summarizes everything
TECNO has pushed hard to change the perception that it is a cheap brand. The Phantom Z is a huge step in that push. Everything about the device screams premium. Plus, looks and feel aside, it is a very good performer. Photography is perhaps its weakest point – and it isn’t that it is horrible in that area. It just doesn’t rank among the best. Some users will frown at the lack of a memory card slot, but it wasn’t a problem for me.
But think of the premium build, beautiful display, snappy performance on Android 4.4.2 Kitkat, very good battery life, and yes, the front-facing camera with LED light, and there is very little to dislike about the Phantom Z. TECNO went for gold, and it is my opinion that they succeeded with the Phantom Z.
5.) Lumia 930
The Lumia 930 and Lumia 1520 are the biggest phones launched by Microsoft flagship in 2014. The Lumia 930 refines the 925 offering, a little bit chunkier, but nonetheless solidly built. Essentially, the 930 is the Lumia 1520 packed into a more compact form.
The Lumia 930 offers the climax of the Windows Phone experience. It has great 5-inch full HD display, a wonderful camera on the back, wireless charging and the latest software from Microsoft. The Denim upgrade, it makes the Windows Phone even more compelling than ever before.
In his review of the Lumia 930, Mister Mo stated:
The Lumia 930 is a perfect smartphone in many ways. It is stunning. It is handy and comfortable in one hand. It is powerful. It has a 5-star camera….
4.) Sony Xperia Z3 Compact
The Sony Xperia Z3 Compact can be summed up in one sentence, “Small but mighty”. It offers flagship power, but in a mid-range size. For those looking for a small size powerful device, this phone is your best bet.
The phone packs a 4.6-inch 720p sharp display with outstanding battery life. Other great features include: Cool UI tweaks, waterproofing, great camera performance, and reasonable pricing (way cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Alpha). If you want a powerful device in a compact size, this is your best choice.
3.) Blackberry Passport
I was impressed by the BlackBerry Passport right from the first time I handled one. The Passport comes with top-of-the–line specifications and performance that is better than most flagship devices currently in the market. Here we have a 4.5-inch 1440 x 1440 pixel resolution display, full hardware QWERTY keyboard, 13-megapixel camera, 3GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, microSD card slot, and large 3,450 mAh battery.
The Passport noticeably comes in a unique form factor that is optimized for productivity, reading, and web browsing. The Amazon AppStore is bundled in the phone and you can sideload and run Android apps, though a few of the apps are not optimized for its square display. Lest I forget, you have an awesome keyboard on this device .
2.) iPhone 6
For iPhone users and lovers, meaning people who don’t want anything else but an iPhone, the iPhone 6 is it. As with all Apple products, the iPhone 6 is slick, well-built, and beautifully designed. You have a larger screen to play with compared to previous iPhones, as well as better performance, better display, and better battery life.
Making the choice of buying this phone is more difficult when compared with phones in the Android world, because here, we see phones that offer same experience at far lesser prices, with added expanded storage. But hey! This is an iPhone and for those who know, it’s a great device. If you’re dedicated to using an Apple phone, this should be your next handset.
1.) Samsung Galaxy S5
Moving from the Galaxy S4 to Galaxy S5, there’s really isn’t much that separates the two. Samsung, as usual, packed the Galaxy S5 with more (mostly unnecessary) features. The heart rate monitor is a good example. The fingerprint scanner is cool too, but it’s difficult to use.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 refines much of what the SGS4 offered. The 5.1-inch display and user interface are top notch. The Galaxy S5 has a plastic body and critics say it makes it feels less premium – giving it a more common like every other Samsung device. However, this is what makes the phone lighter and more compact.
The camera produces great results and performs well in all conditions. The S5 is water resistant too.
