The mobile market in the Democratic Republic of Congo is undergoing significant growth and is currently the largest mobile market in Central and West Africa after Nigeria with more than 40 million subscribers. Tigo DRC, the subsidiary of Millicom in the country, has signed an agreement leading to its acquisition by Orange.
Both networks are almost at par in terms of subscriber base. Tigo DRC launched in 2007 and reported over 4 million subscribers as at first quarter 2014. Congo Chine Telecoms rolled out its mobile network in 2001 and became Orange DRC in 2011 after a 100% acquisition by France Telecom (now Orange S.A.). As at the end of 2014, Orange DRC had 4.3 million subscribers.
This acquisition is subject to obtaining approvals from the competent authorities.
