Automattic, the parent company of WordPress, which powers nearly 30% of all active websites on the World Wide Web, has acquired microblogging and social networking website, Tumblr. The company plans to rebuild its backend from the ground up using WordPress.
Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic, made the announcement of the acquisition on his Tumblr blog. Nice touch.
Tumblr was started in 2007, and was later acquired by Yahoo in 2013 for $1.1billion. When Yahoo itself was acquired by Verizon in 2017, Tumblr was part of the deal. There is no official word on how much Automattic purchased its long-time rival, but word is that it was for peanuts compared to how much it was sold to Yahoo years ago.
