Digital media refers to content that can be accessed on electronic devices and over the internet. These devices include desktops, laptops, tablets, smartphones, feature phones, connected cars, and other connected devices.
Digital platforms include email, websites, blogs, e-commerce stores, social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, instant messaging services, e-books, internet videos, and audio. If you can access it over a connected device, it is digital media.
Digital media is a very revolutionary thing that has changed how the world interacts, studies, works and plays. Here is the catch: you will not make great headway understanding and taking advantage of digital media without understanding mobile. I break it down below.
- There are 7 billion people on planet earth.
- The total number of internet users in the world is 3.6 billion.
- Of those 3.6 billion internet users, 3.4 billion of them access the internet on mobile.
- In other words, 90% of global digital media is mobile.
- Africa has a population of 1.2 billion people.
- There are 362 million internet users in Africa.
- Again, roughly 90% of those internet users in Africa are accessing the internet via mobile.
Do you see the correlation between digital and mobile? Digital IS mobile.
Digital Media Is Mobile
I get asked the question, “It is amazing how you switched from mobile to digital. How did you do it?” And I always reply with this:
“I didn’t switch. Digital media is mobile. As someone who has spent much of my adult life preaching, teaching and enabling people to use mobile, I couldn’t escape it if I wanted to.”
You all call me Mister Mobility. You might as well start calling me Mister Digital right now. It is all the same now.
Mobile is not a fad that you should still be wondering whether to embrace or not. Mobile is the default platform for social media and digital marketing. If you want to reach 3.4 billion people out of the connected 3.6 billion people on planet earth today, mobile is your best shot.
What You Must Do
You must create mobile-friendly content.
If you are building digital platforms, you must build mobile-friendly platforms.
You must target mobile user patterns. You have to understand how people use mobile and how they interact on it.
If you want to increase your reach, you must engage on mobile.
For most products and services, you must market and sell on mobile.
Whatever you do, you must make mobile first and you must take it seriously.
If you are still ignoring mobile, you are a dinosaur. You are living in the past. Most importantly, you are not maximizing your creative and/or marketing efforts and resources.
Android OS alone almost has the same market share as Windows. That’s Android alone. Add other mobile platforms and you can easily see that mobile is bigger than PC. In 2016, ComScore reported that all digital growth was now coming from mobile usage. The PC is declining as mobile grows.
Ignore this trend and be left behind. This is the age of digital media. This is the age of mobile.
